I posted this cattle knife awhile back but never in this thread explaining how I figured out it was made by Empire (and found on a local hunt)... a Shapleigh Hardware made by Empire with wood grain celluloid handles and sporting the Alvord punch but on the same side as the master blade... also has coined liners... figured it belonged here as well.

Great pattern and love the handles on that old Shapleigh! They have a waterfall stripe that should display some movement when the knife is rotated in hand.

Wayne - I understand what you are saying about waterfall celluloid - sort of has that look in a way but does not shimmer or refract light when rotated unlike the waterfall celluloid shield on this Thomaston sleeveboard which has a shimmer when you rotate it in the light (which is actually pretty cool!)... In a followup search on celluloid patterns after I first posted the cattle knife (and we had a long discussion on that thread about what to call the celluloid pattern) I found a reference and photo of a very similar celluloid pattern and had read it was called wood grain... Now if I can find the reference ... anyway here is a closeup of the waterfall shield from that Thomaston and just a photo of blades and whole knife for perspective (whole discussion on that knife can be found at: http://www.allaboutpocketknives.com/kni ... on#p467911

(PS - Apologies in advance as I don't mean at all to derail this thread with this knife - just thought the waterfall pattern was clear on it as comparison)

Wayne, I really like the color of the bone on that Catt.

I only have two cattle knives, an old bone Imperial that has inconveniently gone missing and this synthetic Pal Cutlery I carried yesterday:

Still no luck finding the Imperial. I do have this old Lawrence & Co...something. It's sorta like a cattle knife -- cigar body, spear master, punch -- but it has this rather odd file with a beveled edge that could be a wire stripper or some sort of long scraper.
The spear has weak snap and has seen some serious use (although still gets sharp as can be), and the file/stripper blade is tipped, but the bone is absolutely intact and wonderfully pocket-worn the old way, and both blades riding the second spring snap like gators -- file pull is about an 8-8.5, punch is no slouch either. I don't really know what was on the end of the file blade, as I've never found a complete example of this knife, but I'm guessing either the rest of a tapering file or possibly a screwdriver/scraper end.

Tsar: It looks to me like it could be a screw driver just as is. No?

That is a real nice old Cattle, Tsar. The bone reminds me of an Empire. Can you make out the rest of the stamp?

here's my Schrade 856 Cattle knife, in high definition....

Great color in the bone on that Schrade-Walden 856. The red and yellow combination look like a certain type of 'firey' sunset. I bet there are more S-W out there with bone from the same dye lot.
