All About Pocket Knives

So what do you do when you pick up an old Imperial shell utility with one scale missing? You use it for awhile in the shop doing all sorts of chores that you should do with a knife until.............
You get the brainstorm that you should make some scales for it! You cut up a couple of pieces of leftover Lexan and fit them to the knife;grind them to size and then simulate bolsters on the ends and jigging done with a die grinder using a ball cutter and this is what results: A nice knife that is scary sharp and now unfit for doing all those nasty jobs!Of course it has to have a shield so you dig out an old pin advertising Lone Star Beer and you glue it on the side.

I like what you did with the knife it is now personalised.Love the bottle.

k7k, had you been able to color the lexan, I don't think you would have been able to tell it from factory! Nice job! I've just found this thread, so I'd like to make my contribution. It's an old Winchester that has seen better days, but I really like the bone on this one.

Thank you sir.Actually I have made knife handles from Lexan and colored the bottom surfaces which pretty much mimic that effect.The top knife in this picture is one.

I love that blue!

In over thirty years of collecting I have bought groups, collections and accumulations of knives. At times just to get one or two in the group.

Wow btrwtr that is what I call a boneyard. You got a lot of work to do one of these days if you repair a fraction of those.

Actually the knives are not shriveling up. They are deteriorated but not deteriorating. I usually clean them enough to read the tang stamps and remove any active rust. They stay dry and relatively warm. The biggest threat to them is celluloid out gassing and I do watch for that. Handles that are out gassing are taken off the knives and thrown away.

Maybe it's more of a hospital ward than a graveyard. Like patients waiting for donors. Or donors waiting to donate. Sick but not dead.

I enjoyed the show greatly. Then I realized the "boneyard" looks an awful lot like much of my "collection" and I started feeling sad.

Nice pile you've got going good way to keep em grouped--if you ever started repairing you'd be a real pro before you got done

I wish I had all those. I might be able to find some donor blades for some of my knives.

Here is an old Wilbert Cutlery. Couldn't see anything with loupe but found it with the little lighted microscope Jerry told us about. I went to order some more of them and not many for 2.00 or less. The prices are going up. I too would like to see the good stuff Miller Bros. Blades Guide has Wilbert Cutlery 1910 made for Sears by Napanoch and Empire.

Check out the blade stamp on this old Lenox. "SILVERSTEEL"
Also looks like someone literally stired paint with it. BUT the grinder rash has to be the worst part even though
the pen blade is whittled away.

Need too get ready for a hospital trip at the VA today, but not before I commend everyone for a great show of used, abused, and refused, but in this case not refused cutlery! So happy to see that I'm not alone in collecting knives far past their prime. Thanks again ! ( should be a minimal charge for this show ! ) Bull

I think these would've been lookers in their day. A Remington pearl and a Challenge Cut. Co. in bone. I really like the swirling tang stamp that Challenge used on this one.
