Wow, I don't know but the quality control went out the window on that one so I would think that it got moved after it left the factory?? Is it pinned on with one pin in the center??

Most every shield of that type has one pin in the center and I've seen quite a few of them pivot on the pin axis. I can't tell from the picture but is the shield sitting in a routed channel? Nice looking knife but I would doubt the shield position was done on purpose. Best guess it is either a very strange mistake or has turned since leaving the factory.

Mike, I understand why you were hounding after it for so long! So great that you were able to get it. Congratulations and thanks for sharing it.

A recent purchase, well worn but a nice honest old knife. Unusual pattern, surveyors jack.

What the surveyor lost in use it makes up for in character. Fine looking old and honest knife!

Thanks Tommy, the bone handles are really nice on this one, all the Walden made knives had attractive bone handles.

Here are 4 of my Waldens including a large military, a pearl lobster, a fat jack (nearly 1/4 inch thick blade and a snap to move it), and a aluminum bartenders.

Very nice knifes, djknife, really like the fat jack!

I wanted to revive this thread but as of yet I only have this humble offering. A stainless (?) advertising swayback, around 3" long, with a sheepsfoot blade, age unknown. Still takes a keen edge and vanishes in the watch pocket. Still walks & talks, snaps like a gator, locks up solid. A neat little knife.

Here is a lovely old Walden Knife Co. NY that I am parting with.
This huge folding knife measures 8 3/8” closed and 14 7/8” open.
The lock is in the French style and is correctly known as a cran d’arret or Notch-Lock, note that the notch is integrally forged on the blade and not a later addition. The backspring is tapered and hand forged. The blade was likely made and installed on special order from the Walden Knife Co into an even older, French style handle. Shown in the back of The Antique Bowie Knife book by Adams, Voyles and Moss, there is a similar American Navaja marked “Raymond, New Orleans”.

Got this knife in today. Tang is stamped "Walden Knife Co NY." Handles are both cracked, but still holding firmly. Blade still has good strong snap. Single blade, swell end model. No pattern number found on reverse of tang. Not a perfect knife, but I really like these old quality knives!

Yes, it certainly looks like it has had its share of work done. While I love finding early knives in near mint condition, there's something about these survivor knives that really speaks to me. The stories these knives could tell! I just enjoy collecting the early US brands and learning more about their history.
