Case stamp question??
Case stamp question??
This isn’t my knife, but a inquiry on the r/Caseknives sub on Reddit. It appears to have a “G” stamped before number, and curious minds want to know what it means.

A picture of the entire knife might help.

Here you go. The op was wondering if it was a fake but I kind of doubt it.

Looks like a 1986 knife. I don't see anything from those pictures that would relate to having a G prefix in the pattern number. Somebody else may know.

Re: Case stamp question??
I thought a "G" in the 1980's knives meant "Green?"
Pocket, fixed, machete, axe, it's all good!

Fellers, I believe Mr. Pfeiffer may have to come to our rescue concerning the "G"!
In his 1st book there is a list of suffixes and there is listed only one prefix, it is a "C" that refers to the C61050SAB.

Re: Case stamp question??
Found this 1989 model on eBay that has the "G" prefix. I also thought anything in the 80s with the "G" was referring to green bone, but obviously this is not bone (much less green bone) and can't find any information of a "G" used on this pattern at any time.
Hopefully, one of the experts that have seen this will come along and weigh in.

In Levine's Guide (1985 Edition) on page 80, column #2, it reads "a letter in place of the first digit indicates handles of either metal (M,S,T, or W) or else of fancy celluloid (B, BM, G, GS, H, HA,, P, R, RM, or Y).
I hope this helps.

I hope this helps. Possible that the knife in question has had the blade replaced or it may have had the covers/handles replaced.

Re: Case stamp question??
My late 1980s G61050 has bright green bone. Similarly my late 1980s W61050 has white (not natural) bone. Neither are explained by the quotes out of collector books above. It is common for the authors of collector books who have no interest in newer production to not get good detail on the new stuff in their books.
I'll offer speculation. Maybe too many blades were prepared for green Folding Hunters that did not sell as well as hoped and the overrun were used up in the variation that was selling, less expensive laminated wood. Not confusing collectors 35 years later would not have been the highest priority.

Re: Case stamp question??
I do recall a 1980 red and green set of toothpicks that were marked with the R and G so it's probably one of the above explanations.

Re: Case stamp question??
Unless/until a better explanation is given, I like the leftover blades theory.
FWIW, using the search capability here on AAPK, this isn’t the first time the “panel” has been stumped by this question! https://www.allaboutpocketknives.com/kn ... 66&t=57333

Re: Case stamp question??
I don't recall ever seeing a "G" prefix used on a 65 Folding Hunter. But there it is. I would have guessed it stood for Green Bone as well. So, I will go along with the leftover blades theory.
I have a few Case knives (Trapper, Clasp, Large Coke Bottle) that used left over blades marked on the tang with "Winston Cup Champion." They have great Stag, and I am personally glad they don't have the extreme blade etch that the knives had that were an 'official' part of the Winston Cup Champion series. So, overruns and the use of leftover blades does happen.

Re: Case stamp question??
Although I already said I like the leftover blades theory. But I can't find any evidence of the existence of a green G6265 either. There were some 6265's having green handle covers, but all those I can find do not have a G prefix on the stamps.

Re: Case stamp question??
Below are the only 3 knives I have seen from the 80s that had the "G" prefix and still have not found anything documented about a "G" on any 65 pattern folding hunters.
1985 red, green and white bone 6380 Whittler set
1982 red and green bone 6254 trapper set
1982 green bone G61093 large toothpick

Re: Case stamp question??
Thanks for all the reply’s guys. Kind of strange how it’s stamped, maybe a mistake or cancellation from Case on making a green Hunter but the blades had been stamped.

Re: Case stamp question??
Another possibility is that it went back under warranty after one of its original green bone sides was broken. Maybe Case did not have 1980s green bone on hand and the owner was happier with more traditional wood. I would have accepted that substitute. I would not have bought my 1980s bright green bone G61050 if the auction had not ended low.
