M H Solingen

Post by OLDE CUTLER »

My buddy Sundog picked up this knife recently and asked me to post a picture to see if any of the Solingen collectors on AAPK could ID this knife. It has 3 blades, spear, pen and corkscrew, 4" long closed. The tangstamp is an M and an H in octagons with No. 21, and Solingen under that. I have not found anything in my Goins or Stewart & Richie collector books. Probably celluloid handled? About 100 years old?

Actually, the letters in the boxes are a "W" and a "H" (NOT Whitehead & Hoag).

"W H, in separate scalloped-edge square cartouches (1898, no. 28744):
Wilhelm Hasselbach, Solingen. Registry class: 9b. Style: roman. Note: accompanied by ‘No. 21’."

Info per:
JOHN WALTER
GERMAN TOOL AND BLADE MAKERS
A guide to manufacturers and distributors, their trademarks and brand names, 1850–2000.

The information pertains to the tang stamp, NOT the actual pocket knife.
Here is the link to the information.

It is a FANTASTIC source for information on German tang stamps, maker marks, etc.

Sorry about that, that was my typo to say M and H when it can be clearly seen to say W and H. I had read your posts about Whitehead and Hoag going back to March and saw that it could not be them as they were marked Newark. That is a valuable source for the tang stamps to be filed away for future use. Thanks for the info.
