Anyone Know What this is Called?

Guys,
I got this one in a recent batch of stuff I bought and I have no clue as to what it might be called. Up to now I just have called it 'a small katana'. It is well made and the blade has clear temper lines on the blade. One of the little icons on the sheath is gone. It is a wicked weapon, whatever it is called and sure would appreciate any info anyone might give me.
I will post some photos so check it out and let me hear from youo on it.

Ray, the symbols in the handle pin look a lot like an Islamic symbol of the crescent moon and star. The placement of the star is off, it’s usually placed centered and outside of the moon. But that could be off due to the other symbols. I can’t make out the animal on that pin, is it a cat of some kind and what is above the animal?

The animals on the handle and sheath are, or at least seem to be, horses. I'll post some more photos.

I think that’s a goat on the handle pin. I see two horns and one ear, plus the tail is short and stubby. Wish I could help you more on the symbols, I think those are the key to where it came from. I’m still leaning toward somewhere in the Middle East and a Muslim country of origin. But don’t know what that style of blade is called. Katanas usually have more of a tanto look on the end and that one is very curved. It does look to be a nice quality piece.

Ray! I was just on this site, www.knivesaustralia.com.au , and under the "Trade Knives" thread, they had a very similar knife there, albeit much less fancy, and it was described as a "Boning " knife!

The blade shape sure fits on those but it is hard to tell about size. This sucker is 19 or 20 inches long. including handle.

Without a doubt it is made in traditional Japanese style. The mark on the Habaki, blade collar, reminds me of Don Polzien, but I cannot confirm this, might be an older piece.

I believe your knife would be in the "Skinning" kitchen and or Butcher knife category?
Originating from Japan. It has many Japanese characteristics, such as:
Copper Alloy Blade Collar (Habaki) located on many Japanese blades, to include "Katana Samurai and Tanto."

The "Wavy" pattern (Hasaki) on the entire length of the blade edge is known to be called the "Harmon Line."

The relatively broad blade and strong curve towards the end suggests to me that this might be a cut down Naginata (polearm weapon with a sword-like cutting blade) blade re-hilted onto a knife handle. Who knows when or where this was re-hilted. The handle isn't in a particularly typical Japanese style; it doesn't have a cord wrapped handle, but it does look it has a single pin securing the tang in the handle.
Islamic decorations rarely figures or animals, so I wouldn't assume it has an Islamicate origin.
EDIT: Maybe that animal with the moon and star is supposed to be a Kirin (like the mythical animal on the Japanese beer)?

Thanks, Nephilim. I found an 'expert' at the last show and he agrees with you. I had visions of vast value but it turned out otherwise. There was a guy at the show who fell in love with it and it went to live with him.
