I think I P.O.ed the seller

Post by jerryd6818 »

This is the seller's listing. ---► https://www.ebay.com/itm/Case-Mini-Trap ... 3981848423

And this was the description of the knife.

This was my offer.

This was his counter offer.

Considering the picture(s) (one equal to the first post), and NO description, I felt like I was going out on a limb with that offer.

I looked at his completed auctions and didn't see any knife sales. Lack of experience but he didn't need to be so snarky.

Here's the thing with the Ebay offers, which gets a little confusing:

If someone has an item up for a Buy It Now price and also has a "Make an Offer", it means they'll consider offers under the Buy It Now price.

If they have it set up as an auction with a bid price, it means they'll only consider offers over that bid price, not under. I've experienced the same thing when these offer choices started showing up. I thought it meant to send them an offer under the asking price, just like a Buy It Now. Didn't take long to realize what was up. People tend to get a little testy when you lowball 'em LOL.

Eric has it right. It’s one of the new “features” eBay introduced a few months ago. I made the same mistake the first time I saw it. You’re supposed to make an offer higher than the listed “starting bid” price. Confusing as it looks too similar to the OBO method. ::disgust::

I wasn't aware that was going on. I was under the impression that it was the same as OBO. Now I know. He still handled it poorly IMO. He could have just rejected the offer.

And besides, the knife is very poorly listed. ::huff::

I may be a little cynical, but there is also the possibility that he added the extra zero hoping you'd accept the deal, mistaking it for him accepting your $24 offer.

Maybe he needs the money to buy a decent camera. He also has another peanut listed as new that has a big scratch on the blade.

I guess I’m just a Luddite, but in all the trading I’ve ever done “best offer” has always meant a lower than asked price. This makes no sense to me.

LOL Jerry - thats hysterical !! I've done that so many times (offering below the starting price when they use make offer) - works out probably one out of ten times ... worth the effort (gotta get your offer in early though, shortly after listing starts) ! There's no way to know if we should offer below a starting price - I guess it just depends on the seller. You did nothing wrong in offering below his starting price ... his response made me laugh though !!

I noticed if you scroll down, toward the bottom of that listing is a box that says “Tell us what you think”. Click on it and give ‘em what for!

How about responding to him ... "I saw your counter offer of $240 ... based on the fuzzy pictures of the knife in the auction, I think you may have mistakenly added a zero. Can you please confirm your counteroffer as eBay sellers that use the "make offer" feature should expect bids below their starting price unless otherwise noted". That would be a good retaliatory ::poke::

John, that's well written and very benign but I'm not going to fool with it. A reply is just asking for more stress, but thanks for the idea.
