making a old man happy

Post by richard »

a old man, i know . 86 years young, was useing this old knife every day with no handles . to open his mail.
i said give it to me to rehandle. he said ,no dont bother , but i did any way.and used driftwood i found on the beach.to rehandle it.
cleaned and sharpened it. fixed the blade wobble.
when i gave it back to him he was so happy.that he can grip it now.
its not the best restore i have done, but one of the most rewarding.
thanx for looking.

Those kind of restorations are some of the most rewarding. He probably carried that knife for 30 or 40 years and even though the blades were worn to a nub and the handle was broken, it was still an old friend he couldn't bear to part with. You gave him his old friend back! That's awesome! ::nod::
God bless you for that!

I also like restoring a family heirloom or a knife that was given as a gift from a very important person in the owner's life.

Very nice story Richard! ::tu:: :D

I find those handles breathtakingly beautiful! What an original idea! ::tu:: They also give that older man a connection to the ocean every time he holds it! Absolutely awesome! ::tu:: :D

Very well done! I like the character of the driftwood - it matches the character of that particular knife better than burl Walnut or anything "new and shiny". It was also thoughtful that you left the scales so thick for an easier grip.
But most of all, you gave your neighbor happiness. Great job on that!

It turned out great. It is a very fitting material for that particular knife.

Very nice job on the knife. You picked a good wood to give back to him.
The story that goes with the knife if even better.
