Hello from Arkansas

Post by dmgibs1 »

I am enjoying learning AAPK. I inherited my fathers collection and am using this site to find out what it is and why he loved it. Gathering a new appreciation. Thank you all for the great info. Donna

Hi Donna. ::welcome:: Feel free to ask all the questions you want. If you have questions about a specific knife, good clear photos, especially of the tang stamp will certainly help. I'm assuming that since you inherited your fathers collection it means he has passed on. Very sorry to hear of that.

Hopefully, by engaging in dialogue here about his collection, you can gain a deeper understanding of why he enjoyed knives so much. We're glad you came along and welcome you.

Hi and welcome.

My in-laws were down in the little town of Kirby, 'bout an hour south-west of Hot Springs.
Nice area, albeit too hot for me to settle there

I am in the NW corner in the mountains, I don't think I could survive down there. With climate change, I guess we will all be there soon.

I am in Eureka Springs, NW corner of Arkansas. We are considered the poor man's Hot Springs. A little tourist trap in the mountains. Thanks for the "Welcome'.

Welcome to AAPK. Been to Eureka Springs several times but it’s been several years since I was last there. Used to eat at a smorgasbord there. My sister lived near Greenwood for a few years then moved to Ft. Smith. Also have cousins over the state line in SW Missouri. Somehow we made it to your neighborhood several times. ::shrug::

Hey it worked, thanks Steve. Now I have to learn which forum to post which picture and ask which question. Right after I learn enough of the lingo to ask the question properly.

Looks like some good stuff there. I do notice several with celluloid handle covers in the mix. Those are ticking time bombs - celluloid is notoriously unstable. It can spontaneously self-destruct, no one knows why. But when it does it gives off nitrous acid fumes which will destroy the metal on the knife and all those around it. Collectors call this “outgassing” or “off-gassing”.

It’s recommended to not store knives having celluloid handles in the same container or any confined area with other knives. Store them separately, preferably in open air (like just sitting on an unenclosed shelf) and away from heat and sunlight. You can do a search here for celluloid, outgassing, or similar to see examples of knives that have gone “off”, and discussions about the phenomena. Here’s a good start viewtopic.php?f=2&t=54367

Oh great, I have exploding knives. Now if I only knew enough to be sure of which one was what. ::dang:: That does explain some of the damage I have seen, I assumed they were just not good knives. Thanks again.
