This John Primble knife???
This John Primble knife???
I’m going through knives that my dad recently passed down to me that he and I collected when I was a kid. Looking to learn more about them. Does anyone know the year and value of this John Primble knife? The tang is stamped with John Primble Belknap HDW & MFG Co.

I will do some guessing and say Ulster U.S.A., 1950s, celluloid handles, value less than $50. Unused and knice!

If I were starting a knife collection today I'd seriously consider collecting John Primble knives. I live in Kentucky and they have a strong Ky. tie in that Belknap Hardware was based in Louisville, Ky. Most all the Primbles I've encountered were good quality knives. I can remember when I was a young guy the local hardware store had a small display of John Primble knives available for sale. I may have owned one back then, but for the most part, my focus at the time was on Case knives.

Nothing at all wrong with the knife and a very nice example. I agree it looks like an Ulster made knife.
If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.

I don't think the handles are waterfall. They look like yellow celluloid to me but Boker USA and Primble both used waterfall on knives later than most US companies.

Re: This John Primble knife???
I have yet to understand 'waterfall' and it doesn't seem like it means the same to everyone. Is there a thread or something to look at?
Re: This John Primble knife???
Waterfall is normally off white to yellowish in color. There should be parallel but curving lines visible in the material and when turned on axis in hand the material will display a water like flow or 3-D type movement. The biggest key is the visual flowing movement in the material. The better the material the more movement IMO. If the handles do not display these qualities it probably isn't waterfall.
Here is a waterfall handled razor and pocket knife. You should be able to see the lines.

Thank you, Wayne; it is still a little vague to me but will keep my eyes open and try to remember this.

I took a video of some of my "waterfall " handle knives it on ytube. It's titled For TPK. Don't know how to post a link to it, maybe someone could help. It's not the best video but it will give you an idea on "waterfall " handles.

Re: This John Primble knife???
I worked at Belknap's for a few years as a young man and will share one of my greatest regrets in life..... while employed we were given the ability to buy returns, damaged package items and new stock with our employee discount. This frequently resulted in axes for 2$ .... chain for 1$ per pound and of course ..... knives for pennies on he dollar!
Belknap brand were most frequent but many other brands were available. Alas, I used my paycheck for 'spirits' and music and food.
One of the mysteries I will pose to the group is... even though the Belknap company never 'MADE' knives they are collectible and widely known. How is it that Robinson cutlery a firm which actually made really good knives in Louisville does not command the same respect??
