Recon who made this Barlow?

Post by Meridian_Mike »

It looks like the handles are made of (OOPSjiggedOOPS) saw cut bone.
I can see what looks like an "8" or "81" on the secondary blade.... then looks like a sideways "8" on the main blade.
Here is a few pics......

It's on it's way to me right now. I only paid $11 shipped so no big loss if it's crap.

Are bolsters solid-solid, or solid with a hollow tap feel to them? I could be wrong, but reminds me of some Japanese ones I have seen. The cover material usually looks fair in quality, but the rest of the knife has a cheaper feel to it.

Not sure about the bolsters yet Glenn. It's on its way.
BUT, I was a bit confused since the handles look nice.
Looking at the bottom pic, the knife looks to be put together pretty well.
I was afraid of foreign made since I didn't see a makers name on the tang...... Just an "8". BUT, it is a bit of a mess right now.
I have been searching my files to find a maker who had a Barlow with a model 8..... nothing so far.

That “8” looks like a “CO” to me Mike. But my old eyes may be deceiving me....

Glenn.... I believe you have hit the nail on the head....

I was cruising thru the AAPK online stores and I see a Japan made Barlow that is a dead ringer for mine. Only difference is the main blade is a spear instead of a clip.
It is a G.C.Co Barlow and the description says it has iron bolsters and bone handles.
My tang stamp is different but as Jeff pointed out, I believe "CO" can be seen on the main blade.

It's in Mr Sanders store......

I believe those handles are called saw cut bone and not jigged? Wyeth has a slanted 8 marking of some of their knives? I can't see that well enough to tell what it is. Maybe post better pics once you get the knife.

Looks like a 50's to 60's Japan made knife to me.
