Opinions?
Re: Opinions?
Ike, I would assume it's an old hawkbill that is quite worn down.
It has had plenty of time to be worn too as Southington stopped making knives in 1905.

Re: Opinions?
Looks like a well worn hawkbill pruner knife from one of Connecticut’s oldest cutlery companies. Honest old knife.

Beautiful frame but yes badly worn blade.
If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.

Re: Opinions?
Well, that was my thinking but I was looking for a little more expertise, so, thanks for the answers. While it won't have a prominent spot, It has great old wood and that Southington stamp will keep it out of the "junk drawer". I certainly don't mind an "honest old knife".

Re: Opinions?
Very fine wood handle and it could be a picnic knife because the rounded blade end will be great for spreading peanut butter, etc.
Looks like a very large stump that the knife is resting on, like 2 foot diameter ?

Re: Opinions?
Every time I see a knife like that I wonder about the stories it could tell, the places it has been, and teethings it has done. While not a show piece, it has earned a well deserved rest in an honored place in your collection.

Re: Opinions?
Agree with all the above. A maize knife's tip would be inside the frame, not exposed like that.

Thanks for the comments, really appreciate reading your thoughts.
Colonel, my sentiments exactly, I think those same thoughts whenever I pick up an old knife. It is just an added facet of knife collecting that you don't have with new knives.
KJ, yes, that stump is prob about that size. It was the largest of a few Wild Cherry trees in my backyard, but was beginning to die and had lost a couple of large limbs. Reluctantly, since my shed is only about 15 ft away, we had it cut down. Still regret that.

Looks like an old hawkbill that might have had the tip broken at one time and someone reprofiled it (nice job btw) Great wood scales too. If only it could talk! I love knives with character! Terry
If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Re: Opinions?
Great HOK! I hope you got firewood, smoking wood and some superb walking stick material out of that tree!
Re: Opinions?
Definitely yes on fire wood and smoking wood but didnt have the foresight to set aside any walking stick material. However, there is no shortage of Hickory saplings in my little corner of the world and that is what I normally use. Nothing elaborate at this point, just a basic walking stick.
