92 Antique Calico Jigged Bone

Post by Stephen »

Last night, TSA Knives opened reservation opportunities for their special order #92. Required a $10 non-refundable deposit with an anticipated delivery date of September.
I took a chance and ordered one. Sold out quickly.
I don't think I've seen antique calico jigged bone handles. Have you?

Very impressive #92 display Sabercat ! Are the master blades all Warncliffe style ? Or are some a Spear Point ?
I think the upcoming 92's will be a hot seller.

Picture from the website link posted above. That is one spiffy and for me, desirable piece of cutlery.

Edit: Contacted TSA Knives this morning via email and unfortunately they have all been spoken for. Sugar booger.

That is a most attractive knife. I think for those of us with slow internet connection will find it difficult to get one.

Regarding the 'antique calico jigged bone', i thought 'calico' meant spotted or mottled but this bone is just dark.

Bone almost always lightens up during the final hafting and polishing processes. The finished knives should look much different than the unfinished handle assemblies shown in Onearmbladejunkie’s post. The amount of mottling will depend upon the consistency of the dye penetration.

Thanks Greenman. I look forward to seeing how they turn out. I have a #92 from 2013 with 'smooth calico bone' and it is a light straw color.

Sorry for such a delay to respond...while the wharncliffe or single spear 92s are fine knives...I'm only after the 2 blade Eureka Jack. Spear and coping.

I am mildly disappointed that they've placed the coping blade on the pile side, rather than on the mark side as it used to be. I probably use the coping more than the main blade, and prefer having it "up front". I also think it looks better on the mark side.

I was hoping to ask Bill the reason for the change, but didn't run into him at the factory when I was there last week. My speculation is that on some of the 2013 Northfields, the coping blade obscured a large portion of the long pull...placing the 2ndary on the backside obviously remedies that problem.

The #92 TSA SFO Antique Calico jigged bone is similar to the 2010 #56 Antique Weave jigged bone .

Here is my 92 from 2013 with "Smooth Calico Bone" handles ( shown with 2014 #92 with Che Chen Rosewood). The "Antique Calico Bone" has no resemblance at all to the 2013 Calico bone. I do not understand why GEC uses the same word "calico" for both. There are other instances in which the name for bone has been re-used for bone that looks different. It would be easy to think of a new name for bone with a new jigging or color so there must be a reason for GEC re-using names for bone handles, but i cannot think of what it might be.
