Sabre USA Monarch Knives
Sabre USA Monarch Knives
Hey Guys,
I've got all these new old stock Sabre USA knives and I'm wondering if someone could help me identify them. Are they Schrade Walden or Ulster models etc? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Would you happen to have the model numbers on those?

Re: Sabre USA Monarch Knives
Eric can correct me if I'm wrong, but they look like knives made by Imperial Schrade Corp. using the Ulster patterns and tooling. Similar patterns to those in the Schrade Walden line, but the Ulsters were slightly lower grade (thinner blade stock, tumble polished blades) meant to sell at a lower price point.
I just picked up a Cole National MONARCH knife catalog from 1970. This particular catalog shows all Japanese made knives, it appears that the company in Japan closely copied the Ulster tooling in producing these Monarch knives for Cole National.
Evidently companies like Cole National would contract to various firms in the US and overseas, probably depending on who was more competitive. I'm guessing a lot of it had to do with changes in relative currency valuations.
I'll try to post some images from the catalog later.

Re: Sabre USA Monarch Knives
I have a small handful of Sabre's, a Monarch and a Sabre Monarch. All are stamped Japan save the Sabre Monarch which is stamped USA.
Saw a Sabre listed on eBay that is stamped Ireland. Does that make it Imperial?
Saw another one stamped Hong Kong.
Judge for yourself.

Excellent, those are all the Ulster brand knives, made in the '60's. The only one I'm not sure of is the 203, which knife is that?dto1982 wrote:Yes, 223, 203, 207, 206, and 211.20190612_184050.jpgea42 wrote:Would you happen to have the model numbers on those?

223 - Ulster 82P
207 - Ulster 81
206 - Ulster 98 two blade
211 - This one I believe is the Schrade 293. Is it the trapper?

Re: Sabre USA Monarch Knives
OK, then the 211 is definitely the Schrade 293. The 208 would be the Ulster 183. That's quite an assortment, did you find an old salesman's stash?
The Monarch knives made by Ulster/Schrade were generally three digit model numbers beginning with the number 2. Most of the Japanese ones (they were post-Ulster/Schrade) had 4 digit numbers, or three digits starting with numbers other than 2.
