Cattaraugus 22784?
Just wondering if I got the number right, they’re pretty worn. Also does anyone know what year it may be and what those scales are called, they’re absolutely stunning. Wondering why they didn’t use them more often. Thanks!

That is a very nice little jack knife. The scales are celluloid.
Cattaraugus and other knife companies used celluloid on many of their knives. Similar and dissimilar.
I couldn't tell you what year it was made.
It's a keeper.

The handles look to be "waterfall celluloid" which appears to shimmer if you rotate the knife a little.

Re: Cattaraugus 22784?
Yes, Joe, that's what I was thinking, but I didn't want to call it that until I was sure. They seemed to look like the rings inside a tree when they've been cut. To me, its one of the nicest looking celluloid's I have seen, along with the Christmas tree celluloid. This one here is nicely done and has kept well, I can hardly distinguish the transition from scale to bolster when I run my finger over it. Thanks for the feedback!.. BTW, does anyone know how Cattaraugus numbers their knives? Like with Case, the first number is the scale/handle material, the second is the number of blades, etc. I figure that may help with finding out more about it.
Thanks!
Thanks!

1st number= number of blades
2nd number= number and placement of bolsters
3rd and 4th numbers = pattern number
5th number = handle material
So, as far as your number. 22784.
2 is correct for number of blades
2 is correct for bolsters
4 is ccorrect for celluloid handles
78 is listed as pen/butterbean
This information is from "Cattaraugus Cutlery Co." By Roy Ritchie and Ron Stewart.
I hope I didn't confuse.

I thought some Waterfall has a greenish & bronze tinge to it ? This is something i read. I don't collect celluloid handled knives so have little experience with Waterfall celluloid.

Waterfall will be off white, cream or light yellow in color and translucent. As Roger said handles on the op are not waterfall. Waterfall handles will show a water like flow or movement as the knife is rotated. The celluloid green shell pearl type handles of the OP knife will not show this movement.
If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.

As a visual for waterfall celluloid here is a photo - if you click on it and enlarge you can see very fine lines within the celluloid which as Wayne notes reflects light when you turn it in hand giving the illusion of movement ...

This is one of my Cattaraugus with “waterfall celluloid” handles.
Re: Cattaraugus 22784?
Jacknifeben - I believe the celluloid you are showing was called faux wood grain... waterfall is more translucent.. here is another knife (Empire made Shapleigh cattle knife) with same wood grain pattern as your celluloid ..
