Pics of your sharpening area

Post by Lansky1 »

In between woodworking projects, I use my drill press table next to my workbench for my Lansky sharpening rig. Just curious to see how everybody else sharpens & what your setup is ... post up some pic(s) if you can ::tu::

John, you’re way too organized for me. I have a cabinet shelf with my stones on it. I just grab the one or two I want, some oil or water and a couple of rags, spread some newspaper on the kitchen table, sit down and get after it. ::facepalm::

I’m sitting here on the couch with a folding table right now. Pile of Western stockman knives, old natural stone, and a DMT Extra extra fine diamond hone.

I have a hobby/business in my town sharpening knives.

Doing several in an evening got to be a pain in the back standing at the counter. So I repurposed an old bedside table to use for my Edge Pro setup, it is the perfect height to allow me to sit down and work.

The only things I use regularly not in the photo are my swing arm magnifying lamp and stone flattening setup.

This is my sharpening, cleaning, tinkering and etcetera setup. I have a bunch of other stones and other knife maintenance related stuff under the sink and in a droor. I don't have a lot of space but it works out. I have spent a LOT of time here.

Those Stocks are making me drool! I’ve been looking for exactly the right one for years.

Oh, and I do my sharpening/cleaning with an old newspaper across my lap, couple of files, a dollar store stone and a second hand fine one and a bottle each of thinner, alcohol, and rust remover. Oh, and a pencil.
Does the job!

I like to sharpen at the end of my kitchen counter. With the stone at the edge of the counter so my right hand is not over the counter if that makes sense. But I also will just hold the stone at the kitchen sink.

Near kitchen sink, kitchen table, bathroom sink, basement work bench, lap sitting outside on
front porch or rear porch deck.

Just being careful not to scratch anything the misses has control over! :D

Now just to be clear, I didn't make this myself. I gave the plans to a friend of mine and he made it to my specifications. But thank you for the nice compliments. ::tu:: ::nod::

In my recliner with a TV tray.
This Lansky Turnbox 2D2C will put on an edge that I'm quite pleased with.

Steve:

Is that Lansky hard to use? I could never seem to get a good angle on those types of sharpeners.

Super easy, Mike. Just hold the blade so it's straight up and down, then I slice down the left rod, then the right, alternating each slice. Shown are the ceramic rods (the 2C of the name). Those are for finishing and/or touchup. The two metal rods are coated with diamond dust, thus the 2D of the name. I use these to get my bevel set to 20 for my pocket knives. Kitchen knives are set at 25.

Thanks Steve. I have the other Lansky and have received good results but I might be trying that one as well. Looks easy enough.

Thanks Steve!! It's well built. If my memory serves me correct, it's made from Oak, Cedar, and Birch.
