How should I finish this?

Post by glennbad »

Hey gang,

Every year our company does a fundraiser for local groups. We raffle items, and every year I usually mod something for raffle or silent auction.

This year I'm going a little different than the standard pocket knife. I'm doing this Santoku knife for silent auction. I bought the VG-10 blank from Jantz, so all I need to do is put some kind of handles on it. Keeping in mind it's kitchen duty, I would want something that will hold up to moisture and other kitchen "stuff". These types of knives are not meant for the dishwasher, so I can get a little creative, but want the material to stand up to kitchen use. Off the cuff, I was thinking some kind of micarta, but I'd like to open up the floor to your material suggestions, comments, concerns, etc.

Thanks!

Old Hickory has, of course, used wood for many decades. That said, the last kitchen knife I scaled in wood did not hold up as well as I would have liked it to.
From now on it is Masecraft micarta for kitchen knives.

Not knowing who it's going to...
It might be someone who wouldn't know how to properly care for a wooden handle.
Best bet would be something that requires little to no special maintenance.
Take care and God bless,

Not knowing who will end up with the knife nor how they will care for it, I’d recommend the most indestructible material you can use. Time has proven the combination of a dishwasher and my wife can ruin just about anything short of stainless steel. ::facepalm::

I've been fascinated with stabilized pine cone since the first time I saw it on Bark River knives. It's a special knife for a special occasion so do it up brown.

There is a real good chance that it will end up in a dishwasher at some point, whether or not it is intended to do so. So I would pick a material that can handle a dishwasher. Personally, I like black handles for my kitchen knives.

I agree with the burlap micarta. Either that or canvas micarta. I personally love the look of the burlap, either one is pretty indestructible and both are grippier than linen micarta. I think the lines or paper micarta would be too slick on a kitchen knife.

Robeson's "ShurWood" or Case's "PaccaWood", which are, I think, a resin impregnated, laminated wood material, has shown itself to be very durable.

I use sixty year old Robeson kitchen knives every day and they look like they were made last year. I suspect Case knives with PaccaWood handles are similar.

I have no idea where you'd obtain blanks of those materials, though.

Robeson made carving sets cases out of large chunks of ShurWood. They also made ashtrays, etc, that show up on Ebay frequently.

I do like that burlap, but I wonder if the water/moisture will soak into the threads...

I would suggest Black Canvas Micarta with nickel silver fasteners.

Hoping for the best turnout for you what ever you choose, Glenn. ::tu::

Well, you can if you wish. I did a 110 mod last year, and a couple people here reached out to me to bid on it for them.

I guess I'll get it done first though, LOL!
