Wards 4 blade stockman/cattle. Who made it?

Post by Rotten »

Not my knife. A friend picked this up and we've been trying to figure out who made it and when and if it is celluloid as we suspect? Shield is not pinned. All blades except the punch have half stops. One of the pics shows an interesting thing about the bolsters, they have a lip that extends under the scales, this is present on all the bolsters.

I hear you and it could very well be Camillus/Camco which was my initial thought, but the more I handle and look at it it just doesn't feel like Camillus.

Levine says Utica and I would tend to agree here.

I vote Utica 1950's to 60's era based on the thin blade stock and blade grinds - similar to 1950's era Kutmasters.

I had a four blade wards stockman that looked to be utica, it's construction looked similar to yours. That spiral punch looks like camillus to me but the rest of the knife doesn't. Did utica use a spiral punch?

" Did utica use a spiral punch?"
Or, did Camillus supply other manufacturers with punch blades ?

Utica did use a spiral punch in their knives. Whether they made it in house or had them outsourced I don't know.
If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.

I ended up trading into the knife so it is now on the shelf at home. Don't have it in hand right now but comparing it to my Camillus knives I would be surprised if the punch or any part of it was made by Camillus. The punch, as well as the other blades, are very thin. And although I am by no means an expert and it's hard to explain the Wards just doesn't feel like Camillus. I have no Utica to compare it to so my opinion may change in the future. I'm happy with it sitting with my other stockman and the 4 blade pattern makes it unique in my collection so far.
