What is this? JB-Weld?
What the heck did this guy do to this Camillus? Is this JB-Weld or something similar?

Looks like JB or liquid steel TFL. I guess a quick fix was all he was interested in.

At some point in time, it was fairly common to use melted lead or babbitt metal to repair knife handles, I've had several. If it's lead and you want to repair it just use a soldering iron to remove it. If it's babbitt metal...

I do not think I would repair it.
Makes a good conversation piece as it is.

Re: What is this? JB-Weld?
I don't have any JB Weld knives but I do have this Clauss Barlow that someone used...SOMETHING to patch a piece of broken bone on the end. It feels synthetic, plastic-y, but dense and not like cheap material. I have no idea what it could be.
These photos shows how the "fix" looked before I sanded it down to match the liners and the shape of the bone. I still haven't dyed or stained it but it feels a lot better in the hand than it did when I first got it. The blade took a wicked edge despite all the dings on it and it makes a fine carry knife.

Everything's better with a Barlow
Re: What is this? JB-Weld?
I've got one that looks similar.
Someone cared to save the knife and I'm glad they did and I'm glad it's mine.
Nice old knife, yours.
Nice Barlow Tony. Being a Clauss make it nicer.

JB-Weld is liquid duct tape.
Re: What is this? JB-Weld?
I have one that is probably JB Weld. Finely crafted too!

I paid $1 for this old Keen Kutter at the local flea market. When I got it the mark side cover had been broken, along with the nickle silver liner, and was repaired using JB Weld. I redid it with rosewood. Amazing what people try to fix with JB Weld and duct tape (usually unsuccessfully). I have been carrying and using it for a couple of years.

Re: What is this? JB-Weld?
I've used PC-7(a two part epoxy)to repair a couple of knives that had ebony or black composition handles with a fair amount of success in matching the texture and color. I have several older knives that had been repaired with what looks like cutler's cement(a mixture of beeswax, brick dust and pine pitch). A couple of these knives are over a hundred years old and the repairs;while not color matched very well are holding up extremely well. I also have what I believe is an old Indian trade knife(a butcher knife blade with a bone handle filled with lead and copper decorations on the outside).
Back then the intent was to make the handle smooth to grip;not look good.
On one knife I will be able to do a proper repair as a friend of mine just gifted me several pieces of ebony and tiger maple blocks.
