Wow. I went to KSF right after their email arrived, bought one and then immediately posted above. I must have scored one of the last ones.
Too bad, i thought my post might help, but it was too late.

Edit to add: i had intended to buy no more knives until a few bills have been paid off, but this #46 Whaler with the Ironwood handles is really a smart looking knife. What cinched it was price, kind of low for this much knife (Thank you Mr. Howard) and knowing that on the secondary market the price will at least double.

Both the Desert Ironwood & Muscle Bone #46 are Tidioute knives. I see no indication that there will be Northfield versions coming. And what could be done to make this more decked out ? Already has a long pull and a long blade swage. Could do carved bolsters in a fancy pattern and handles of Giraffe bone & Mammoth ?
Anyone know what's up ?
If no Northfield in Mammoth, i predict a Mammoth Northwoods.

I guess KSF just doesn't much care for my business.

I haven't received a notice about any of these recent releases from them with the exception of the camel bone 74s which i had already arranged for, and currently own 2 of.

Disappointing. Oh well, I shouldn't have a problem living with the muscle bone variation.

Send KSF a message asking to be put back onto the mail-out list. Likely a computer issue but they would not know until you told them. I am sure KSF values you as a customer. I believe that 'Josh" 'Derrick" and crew really do care that every customer is pleased with every transaction.

Did anyone buy a whaler at knife connection today? I signed up for notifications last night and got an email today at 3:10 PM that they were available. I didn't see the email until 4:00 so by the time I got there of course they were gone ::teary_eyes::

I am not on their list. Have checked a few dealers today and most seem to have not yet posted the Muscle Bone ones. KSF posted the D.I. ones 2 days ago, but no M.B. ones yet. I wonder why the delay ? KSF is one of the top GEC dealers so likely they receive new knives ahead of smaller dealers ?
i.e. is KSF holding back on listing the Muscle Bone Whalers ?

The Muscle Bones just shipped this week, should start showing up today or tomorrow. I'll let you all know as soon as I get the notice to pay for my reserve.

I picked up my #46 Whaler with Desert Ironwood handles today. Have just opened it & WOW ! The handles are the finest pieces of wood i have ever seen. I will take pictures in the morning. In addition to this the blades are not difficult to open.
This is a GREAT knife.

Ironwood showed up yesterday and I am very happy with it, really like how GEC upped the size of the shield to match the size of the knife.

CK just issued the notification to pay for the Muscle Bone 46s.

A couple initial observations.

The bone version is $144. Considering they're already selling for more than twice that amount on the secondary market, that's not too bad a price IMO.

CK estimates the pull on the main blade as an 8 and the pen blade a 9 (!!!). This one's a nail-breaker, fellas, old-school GEC style.

The knife is so big CK isn't even offering a knife slip option.

It looks better in HD photos as a finished product than it did in the GEC blog photos during production.

The picture above showing the two #46, note that the ebony(?) one is a Northfield and the new Desert Ironwood one is a Tidioute, yet the 'trim level' is identical. So, is there a Northfield version coming in this new batch of 46's ? Likely not as it is not shown in the GEC Production Schedule. Just a bit odd that these new 46's are Tidioute but the 46's from previous year are Northfield even though the trim is the same.
JohnR: very fine wood on your knife as well. These Desert Ironwood Whalers are a home run on all counts. The ones i saw on ebay for $200 over retail sold within 2 days.

I am a new collector. I did not realize that there had already been Whaler knives made by GEC. Was everyone scrambling for the older ones too? The Ebony looks very nice. BTW, what do you mean by "trim level"? Thanks.

As is so often the case for me, the knife is better looking in person than in my pictures. The wood grain & color shades are brighter than these pictures show.

GEC made the #46 Whaler in 2011 and 2013. GEC had not caught on then as much as it has now so they were easy to buy, no rush necessary. More recently these knives on the secondary market like ebay have been getting a lot of bidding and sell from $350 to $1500 for one of the few ivory handled ones. (This $1500 is an anomaly, one sale)
Trim refers to details that are not necessary for function but add to attractiveness like a grove on the bolsters or a swage along the blade spine, or an unusual shield such as a beaver image, etc.
With GEC the Tidioute knives are basic and the Northfield knives have extra 'trim', although not evident with the Whalers.
