Does anybody have an 81 deluxe stockman?

The Camillus Cutlery Company was one of the oldest knife manufacturers in the United States with roots dating back to 1876. The company manufactured Camillus branded knives and was a prolific contractor for other knife brands up until its last days in 2007 when the company filed for bankruptcy.

Does anybody have an 81 deluxe stockman?

Post by KnifeSlinger#81 »

I was scrolling through the camillus catalogs and came across this. It greatly intrigued me. Does anybody own or have seen one? I want to know if they were only made in bone and if they had coined liners like the 69 deluxe stockman.

Paul, why all this self inflicted pain. You fixate on a hard to find GEC 81, now it's a near impossible Camillus 81. :mrgreen: ::poke::

From the information I was able to find, the 81 only came in a synthetic Camillus called Brownstag®. Using the 69 and 80 as a guide, I would have to guess the 81 did have coined liners. It was not made in 1955 or before and is not in the 1956 price list. The first and only catalog I have access to that shows the 81 is from 1957. The 81 does not appear in or after the 1965 catalog so it was only made for a very few years. Exactly how many, I don't know. Unless you get lucky, you may be looking for this one for quite a while. Good luck.

This is a four inch stockman for Craftsman (that means 1941 or later) which is almost certainly a Camillus. But I think it is a #69 clone, not a #81. ?

#69 is 4" closed with a Turkish Clip main blade. In 1957, the #69 had a Federal shield.
#81 is 3-7/8" closed with a regular Clip blade. The #81 had a football shield. Can't tell you what shield a Craftsman had. It was sometimes different than the shield for the maker's brand knives.

Jerry thanks for all the info. While I'm not a camillus guy there are a few patterns I'd really like to have in rogers bone. Stockmans are something I collect whether they are schrade or not so I like to keep my eye out for certain ones that catch my eye. The catalog (1955) says genuine bone stag, so is the catalog incorrect? Approximately when did camillus stop using bone? I'd assume early 60's but my dad once told me to never assume anything. :D

Nice knife Cal ::tu::

Looks like I didn't go back far enough. I didn't see it in the 1955 catalog so I didn't bother with anything before that. I just saw it's in the 1954 catalog listed as having bone handles. As I mentioned before, it shows up in the 1957 catalog as Brownstag® which is a synthetic and isn't in the 1965 catalog at all.

I have seen one 81 pattern in bone. I own one in the Brownstag handle material. It does have the coined liners and the "jimped" center liner on the back. It also has the "Camillus DeLuxe" etch.

Well Jerry, I ain't been looking but I came across a camillus 81 for sale, seemingly bone and in unused condition, so I bought it. Never expected I'd find one. I feel lucky. :D

I'll show it when it arrives.
