Gorham info.
Gorham info.
I have this Gorham knife. It appears to be silver but it is not hallmarked like others I have seen. Any info?

Re: Gorham info.
Just wondering how do you know that it's Gorham if it's not hallmarked or stamped?

The tang is stamped Gorham on one side and 041 on the other.

Most likely silverplate then if it doesn't say Sterling on the handle and doesn't bear Gorham hallmark on the blade.

Is the floral pattern on the handle from one of their tableware patterns, or is it unique to the knife?

If it's a fruit and nut knife, should the master blade not be silver?
Gorham made some Sterling silver handled knives, but I agree this is not one.

I don't have my fruit knife book handy but I suspect the 041 stamp may be a pattern number. A lot of USA made fruit knives were usually .900 fine (coin)silver but many were not stamped as such. It could also be silver plated as Gorham made a lot of silver plate. Without doing any invasive testing it is hard to determine what it is made of. Some of them had steel blades and could be tested with a magnet but most were made of a non-ferrous metal. Others liked to do a bend test(NOT recommended)by deflecting the blade sideways and see if if pops back into position. A silver or nickel silver plated blade will stay bent while a steel blade will not.
It looks like a nice old fruit knife and I don't believe the difference in value between a silver plated and solid silver is very much;unless you're looking to melt it down for the silver content.
