Wade & Butcher stag handle pocket knife

Post by WhaleDriver »

Anyone have any information on this knife, it’s age, value, or otherwise?

I’ve searched rather extensively, including through this forum and here’s what I think I know. It was made some time between 1818 and 1890 (since it doesn’t have England stamped on it). I suspect it is 1850-1890 because it belonged to my great great grandfather, who was 16 during the Civil War. But, his father immigrated to the US from Ireland and lived in Philadelphia for a while before moving to KY. And it appears Mr. Wade lived in Philadelphia at some point, too. So it might pre-date m great great grandfather and have come from his dad?

Just curious what information anyone could provide as I’m only able to find examples of Wade & Butcher Bowie knives and straight razors and a few specialized pocket knives, but none like this one.

Obviously, since it’s a family heirloom it is priceless, as I would never sell it. But I would like to know it’s value out of curiosity if anyone has known a similar one to sell.

Thanks for your help!

Finding any concrete info on W&B can be tough. I would also suspect 1850-

That's a dandy old knife!

I can't help you out on the age or value, but it is one nice old knife. Only 160 years of being around can make stag look that color. It sure appears to be a civil war vintage knife! Thanks for showing it and hang on to it. ::tu:: Terry

Nice old knife. The blade to frame joint is rare it is seem on some Remington Bullets and few other knives. I can't remember what this joint is called. Maybe clean and flush???
