Re: Case Baby Doc knives
What qualifies as a "Baby Doc? I have this 1965-1969 Single blade, bare end Dr's knife that I don't know too much about yet.
The bone handles appear black but they are (I believe) dark brown, and saturated with grime or perhaps they are black, and the dye has faded in areas.

Re: Case Baby Doc knives
All the doctors knives I have seen have only 1 blade. The baby docs usually have the spatula blade. Yours certainly looks to be a doctor's knife

Re: Case Baby Doc knives
Ken, the Case Baby Doc's are 2-7/8" closed and have a spear main blade paired with a spatula secondary blade. Cute little devils.
Oldredbone67, I don't know what the handles on your Doc are called but I like them.
Doctors knives are traditionally 3-5/8" closed and come with a spear main blade paired with a spatula blade. Infrequently they have a pen blade secondary and on rare occasion a clip blade for a main. I even have a couple with three blades. It's the square butt and slender frame that marks them as a Doc. I quit collecting them in the early 2000s when Case started releasing them as a single blade.
I have a couple to add to your thread.

Thanks Jerry, I am not sure if they are bone or not, but you are right, whatever they are, they do stand out.

To check to see if bone or synthetic (usually Delrin) get one of these. Less than two bucks on eBay including shipping.
Note the haversian canals in the bone (spots where the blood vessels and nerves run through it)

Re: Case Baby Doc knives
Woe. Thanks for the information.
Re: Case Baby Doc knives
In addition to the difference in length, the Baby Doc is Case pattern #82 and the Dr. is pattern #85.
The knife in the OP has "cracked ice" handle scales which are laser etched bone.
Here's my trio of stag baby docs.

Thanks for the info on the "cracked ice" handles. I wasn't sure if they were bone or not.

Nice Docs, Doc. I especially like the looks of the banded 2006 #07810 6282SP SS Diamonte Dark Red Smooth Bone. I've never seen a banded Baby Doc before. Cool.

Re: Case Baby Doc knives
Thanks for adding the extra info guys.
I found the line of dots under a patch of grease, indication my "Doc" is a 1972, and on closer examination the handles do appear to be Delrin.
Sorry to side track...

Dr. M, a very minor and insignificant observation that is somewhat off-topic, but...I'm curious about the first one you have labeled as Caribbean Blue Bone...I realize that Case has a number of different subsets in their Blue Bone repertoire (Caribbean, Mediterranean, Sky, Blue Bone, etc.), and maybe it's just the lighting, but the bone on your Baby Doc really looks more like Peacock Appaloosa to me. I used to collect that particular handle variety because it is so attractive with its mottled splashes of blues, greens and yellow gold but have long since sold them all and moved on to other obsessions and no longer have any photos of my former collection. I'm just wondering if you have it labeled as Caribbean Blue because that is what is on the original box label? Either way...very pretty bone...brings back some good memories.DR_MAGOO wrote:Nice Baby Docs being shown.

Here are three different Case Blue Bone hues for comparison (alas, on Wharncliffe Mini Trappers, not Baby Docs). From top to bottom: Sky Blue, Caribbean Blue, Mediterranean Blue.

That one really is unique with four pins in a straight line. I don't recall ever seeing that before...on any Case knife.jerryd6818 wrote:Nice Docs, Doc. I especially like the looks of the banded 2006 #07810 6282SP SS Diamonte Dark Red Smooth Bone. I've never seen a banded Baby Doc before. Cool.

Q, Thanks for your input. I agree that it looks like Appaloosa. I just now pulled the box and knife and took a better pic. Yes, the box does say Caribbean Blue. I also purchased it new from SHC and it is 1 of 100. I'll try and find the SHC Catalog and see what it is called.QTCut5 wrote:Dr. Nice. Good pics. Thanks.
I guess there's always a certain degree of variation to be expected with different batches of dye and also between smooth vs. jigged bone.
