GEC #78 American Jack Is Out
The Great Eastern Cutlery #782217 Tidioute Cutlery American Jack in Elderberry Jig Bone has been released for sale. More to follow.
Coming soon is the smooth white bone edition. I think that's the one I want.

Re: GEC #78 American Jack Is Out
That's a real good looking knife Jerry, both versions. I'm wondering, though, what the difference is between that knife and #77 Yankee Jack. Am I missing something here because they look almost identical. Or maybe one is a slightly different size?

Mike, I'm not sure about the size but the 77 has squared off front bolsters.

Same length. For me, it's as Rick said, the bolsters are the most obvious difference.XX Case XX wrote: I'm wondering, though, what the difference is between that knife and #77 Yankee Jack. Yep, I see it now. You and Jerry have good eyes. I like both those patterns, they're good looking knives.Railsplitter wrote:Mike, I'm not sure about the size but the 77 has squared off front bolsters.

XX CASE XX was asking about the "Yankee Jack" which has rounded Bolsters same as the new #78Railsplitter wrote:Mike, I'm not sure about the size but the 77 has squared off front bolsters.
FRJ got it right (well spotted)
The secondary is in front on the #78.
Having been around now for 10 years all these GEC models and variations are becoming hard to separate - but it's fun trying.

Re: GEC #78 American Jack Is Out
They are both good looking knives but after looking and comparing them for a while, I've come to the conclusion that the Yankee Jack is more pleasing to my eye. Still may get an American Jack. Betwixt and between right now.

Re: GEC #78 American Jack Is Out
Received a notice today that the #78 American Jack in smooth white bone hit at least one dealer as of today. This is the Tidioute variation. The Northfield variation, which will include stag covers, will come along later.

Re: GEC #78 American Jack Is Out
Really wanted one of the Desert Ironwoods to go with my Desert Ironwood Calf Roper. They went hot while I was at work. Time I got home they were all gone but eight. Only two of those were of interest to me. Those were gone in a very short amount if time. So I bought a smooth white bone.

Re: GEC #78 American Jack Is Out
This #78 American Jack is not significantly different from the #77 Yankee Jack; same frame & same blades. It is understandable as GEC has now likely created every pattern that they had planned to so now come the 'repeats'. I would like to see the 56 Dogleg be repeated.
I like the look of the smooth bone 78. i think i need one.

I wonder if the Northfield will be equipped with a long pull on the master blade. I think I wool wait and see.

Here is the American Jack in a Northfield with imitation tortoise shell covers. Much more my cup of tea!

While I agree they are similar kj, the 78 has stouter blades and springs than thee 77.kootenay joe wrote:This #78 American Jack is not significantly different from the #77 Yankee Jack; same frame & same blades. But I think GEC is far from done with new patterns. The 56 is one of their best, complimented by the 18 Beagle, i await the large 4" dogleg patiently. We have seen no coffin style jacks yet and only a tiny coke bottle jack, again patiently waiting on the 3 7/8" version (exactly 3 7/8" )and the 5". Will GECs cutlers demand to create orange blossum lobsters? I hope so. The. 44 Magnum gunstock will be out first quarter or so 2018 and looks to be fantastic. And they should do a swayback jack too. But I presume Bill Howard won't see this post and have made whatever he wants. And I will be waiting dollars in hand.

The #47 is a swayback jack. I borrowed this photo from Gino in the EDC thread today:robbobus wrote:The. 44 Magnum gunstock will be out first quarter or so 2018 and looks to be fantastic. I'm looking forward to the big gunstock as well. And, yes, we will be standing by regardless of what they build with wallets open.
Should have my smooth white #78 in hand in the upcoming week. The anxiety is killing me!

Re: GEC #78 American Jack Is Out
Yesterday (Sunday) i was cruising on ebay and saw an ad for a new 2017 GEC #78 American Jack with smooth white bone and a SINGLE blade for $80 delivered. So i bought it as seller's FB is perfect. I have even received a 'shipped' notice with tracking number even though i doubt it has been shipped.
From what i can see on the GEC site the single blade 78's have not yet been shipped to dealers. And why would a seller be so keen to sell the newest, hottest, GEC at a price that cannot not have any profit in it for himself ? He had 4 and 2 were already sold.
Can someone here explain such a low price for a knife that soon will be in high demand ?

Re: GEC #78 American Jack Is Out
Here is my single blade #78 that i bought on ebay from Circle A Knives. Never heard of them and price was lowest of all so i wondered if i was taking a chance. But all just fine and it's a nice well made well fitted knife. It is perfect in it's simplicity and basically perfect in construction: pull ~ 5-6, clean half stop, good spine-spring alignment, centered blade, smooth action, zero play, and, slender.
One could actually commit to this knife "I will carry you forever".
I like it.

Nice looking knife! Circle A Knives has an AAPK store on the forum. I've purchased from them twice myself and I highly recommend them.kootenay joe wrote:Here is my single blade #78 that i bought on ebay from Circle A Knives. Excellent dark dense ebony on your 78. I think it is perhaps the best of all handle materials. There are a great many well used 100+ yr old knives with ebony handles that remain in perfect condition, no cracks, chips or shrinkage.
Great knife !
