What kind of knife is this please? Unusual locking mechanism
What kind of knife is this please? Unusual locking mechanism
I'm now officially hooked on pocket knives, just 2 weeks after picking up my first one. I got this cheap (£6) in a little antique centre last week because the pin holding the unusual (?) locking mechanism was broken:
1) What kind of knife is it? Fruit knife?
2) Does this mechanism have a name? Is it actually unusual?
3) What is 'Bace'?
4) Any idea of the age of the knife?
Many thanks, Iain
After reading around here and watching a youtube video or two on pinning and peening, I ordered a 2mm brass rod and tried to re-pin it. Amazingly it worked, and I'm now the proud owner of a cleaned up and shiny knife which snaps into place with a gratifying click and folds back when the release lever is lifted:
The tang is embossed with the words Inox and Bace (?)
Inox, I found out here, is the European shorthand for Stainless steel, but after extensive searching online, I've now hit a complete dead end. Can anyone help with any of the following please:
1) What kind of knife is it? Fruit knife?
2) Does this mechanism have a name? Is it actually unusual?
3) What is 'Bace'?
4) Any idea of the age of the knife?
Many thanks, Iain

It is called a navaja pattern and made in Spain. The name is Albacete;a region of Spain known for knifemaking.

I think those knives have very graceful designs, and I have bid (not enough) on a few of them.
Your's is especially "sweet" looking, and is just the right size IMHO.
Nice job on the rescue as well.

Thanks Ken. Yes it's the first one of my (so far) small collection I like so much I want to carry it around with me! Sadly, its 3.5 inch blade means that under UK law I face arrest and prosecution for carrying it without good reason
Interesting side note: my wife is Venezuelan and she tells me that navaja is the name given to any small folding knife there.

Some of these knife laws are just plain silly.
When you say "without good reason" ... What would encompass a "good reason"?
Something like a shop owner or maybe someone that commutes at night? How seriously do they enforce that law?

As you say, plain silly. Don't read this if you have high blood pressure. Man arrested and prosecuted in the UK for having a Swiss Army Knife in his car's glove compartment:
"Mr Knowles, a grandfather-of-four from Newton Abbot, Devon, was charged after police stopped him in his car in February. The keen caravanner used the multi-function knife for picnics during camping trips in the countryside with his wife.
Police discovered it alongside a torch, maps and a first aid kit when they searched Mr Knowles’s car after he had passed a roadside breath test.
The full-time carer assured officers he used it on holidays and to cut up fruit for his wife Pat, 64, who suffers from Huntington’s disease."

Re: What kind of knife is this please? Unusual locking mechanism
That is insane.
Where is the discretion on the part of the officers?
Maybe it is just the time we live in, and from what I understand, England is FULL of foreign nationals, and immigrants that are creating more stress on the system than you have ever faced there.
I sure do not intend to go down a road of political discussion on this but come on... Nare do wells do not really prefer Swiss Army knives or 50 year old Spanish fruit knives.
New York City residents also faced a similar law, and thousands of prosecutions occurred in just a three year period. NYC cops are always gonna get ya anyway... Knife or no knife
Maybe you all should petition to carry swords again. If you are born in England, you get a sword! Then no one would care about 3.5" pocket knives.
I wish you well sir. Don't let your new passion get you a night in the tower!

England... don't get me started! "I wish you well sir. Don't let your new passion get you a night in the tower!" Thanks, I'll try and keep out of trouble. Truth be told, I've been in trouble twice in recent years: I stopped to take a photo of my wife in a shopping centre using my phone and was aggressively accosted by security guards who said it was a illegal to take photos due to "anti-terrorist legislation." The other time I was walking along a county lane and picked a stalk of cow parsley (that's a weed). A police car screeched to a halt and 2 officers warned me that it was illegal to take wild flowers from the roadside.

Re: What kind of knife is this please? Unusual locking mechanism
It sure enough is...
https://www.ebay.com/itm/HUGE18-50-INCH ... 0505.m3226
The seller is in the UK as well.
If you search "Navaja Knife" on FleaBay you will find some real beauties. You may even come across one like yours to give you an idea on the value.
There is something about a graceful yet still ugly duckling. I have a soft spot for that style, and they are on my list of must haves.
I didn't ask... Is it legal to own larger "carry" type knives in England? I guess it must be but Carrying a carry knife is illegal...
Go figure.

Re: What kind of knife is this please? Unusual locking mechanism
"The seller is in the UK". How odd! He seems to offer sales in the UK too. So it looks like someone can set up a USA account then buy and sell in UK. Yes, the law here is bizarre. I can buy a 12" bread knife in my local supermarket yet risk arrest when I get to the car park with it

It's kind of the same thing in the U.S. with hand guns I suppose.
You can walk into a pawn shop or a gun show, and buy anything you want but traversing the parking lot to your car could be the end of it.
People do not make criminals... Laws make criminals!
