 That is something Keith! Makes me wonder what the small town politics were that were involved in that. ::hmm:: Whatever it is I bet there's an interesting story. If only we knew what it is.

But I'd classify it as a temporary victory, given the status of the two cutlery companies today. ::sotb::

You better pray that Brandford Supply was not supplying the tents, tables, and chairs!

i suspect it's quite simple. The Remington salesman offered a lesser price.

It's just business.

Very possibly true. But Bradford is a small town. I grew up in a small town so I know how things work. It's hard to believe Case didn't get a "last look" opportunity to match a competitor bid. It's also plausible that Remington thought it would be feather in their cap (and a great joke on rival Case) to get that contract, and bid a price so low that Case turned it down on final look.

Idle speculation - we will likely never know the whole story.

Bradford Supply is still in business but the company has been in Illinois since the 1960s. They supply oil field equipment.

Here is their history: http://bradfordsupplycompany.com/companyhistory.html

Institutional memory of the Bradford, PA years is probably long gone but since the simplest explanation of events is usually correct, I think Charlie is right... it was just a matter of price. (However, I hope that long ago salesman got an extra bonus for that Bradford sale. ::tu:: )
