Case Identification Numbers

Post by cookie58 »

I have these knives and both are stag. I traded for them about 10 years ago and before I knew anything about Id numbers. I am new to this forum and going to try and post pictures. Thanks for allowing me the chance to share..... In case you can't make the numbers out, they are correct with the exception of 6 on both. The whittler is a '75 and the stockman is a '78.

Those were bone handled knives, both have been rehandled in stag.

True. Seems to have been well-done, but, they are not original

I believe the blades should start with numbers 51xxxx or 52xx on tang.

Difficult to read on provided pictures.

I don't believe those two patterns were offered in stag during the 70's when there was a limited amount of Sambar stag to be had. I don't have Steve's book 'Collecting Case Knives" with me but I believe it shows a very limited number of patterns that were available in stag Outside of the Stag Collector sets. Those two patterns were not included in any of the sets.

Thanks for all the information. You know with the excitement of trying to get the pictures on, I said the stockman was a '78. As you all can see it is not. It is a '77. These were traded for at differing times and 2 different people. And I know, without doubt, they were not trying to cheat me at the time. Any ideas on how the material was obtained for these? I am posting more pictures for practice....Thanks.

There is no way to figure how these came to their current state as there are some very proficient knife mechanics out there. The 6380 pattern is a very desireable pattern and even noted as a rehandle would probably fetch a surprising price.

Let me give you something else to think about. I just checked the price list here by the appropiate patterns. The 6380 is not listed for 1975 and the 6332 is not listed for 1977. That is, if I looked at it right.....Thank you for all the good information.

They are listed i some of the guides as bone for those years. As other have noted they were not produced in stag for those years. I will say it was a great job of re handling and the stag is really pretty. Have seen the 80 pattern re handled in stag before. As Greg said a nice looking knife that still has value. ::tu::

Just a thought, but it would have been much easier to have put newer blades into an older frame, than to change handles from bone to stag. Bill

The 6380 and the 6332 were both produced each year in the 70's up until 1978. In 1978 the 6380 was discontinued and the 6332 was changed over to the 63032.

For the 80 pattern, Case never made it in stag prior to the 1980's, when a few limited SFO runs were made of the 5380 in stainless steel.

So if you ever see a 5380 with a tang stamp prior to the 1980's, it is a fake or rehandle.

Looking inside an opened knife with a light and magnification if you have it, can you see pins holding the shields in place or just two empty holes?

Hello Charlie. I have some more pictures to share. I hope everyone can make them out. I tried to take them inside the knives along the brass liners and you can see the brass pins that hold the handles on. I would just like to know for sure in case I ever want and have an opportunity to sell. I have posted some more pictures of a Boker, Henckel, and a German-eye in their respective forums, if anyone wants to look at those....Thanks so much for looking and allowing me an opportunity show.
