Latest Canal Street Additions

Former Schrade President Walley Gardner and principal Joe Hufnagel joined with nine master cutlers to form a group of US craftsmen with over 300 years of combined knife making experience to create Canal Street Cutlery. It was first located in upstate New York where a long and rich tradition of quality knife making dates back to the 19th century. Unfortunately, the company closed its doors in 2015, but not before making some great knives. The brand was resurrected in 2018 as Canal Street Cutlery Co-Op & focused on making very small batches of high quality traditional knives. As a Co-Op, it was owned by the knife makers who worked there. Unfortunately, the business model couldn't hold up & the entity again ceased production.

Tom, you've got some real beauties there! That two blade congress is really a unique one, I don't recall those ever being produced, and that shield is an unusual one too!!

I do not have a Canal Street Room, however, I have carved out a section of my Schrade Room just for the Canal Street Knives. They are like step siblings...lol. After all, family is family...

Eric, that 2 blade half congress was really unique...that's why I grabbed it up. I have never seen one before, it is a Canal Street knife and the shield is extremely unique...never seen one of those either. I need to catch up with Wally and Uncle Harold to get the scoop on this puppy. It also has half stops...I had to have it.

The swell center Jack was for Moore Maker and the folding Hunter with liner lock was a prototype for KaBar

Then there is the Stag 1873 Bowie and then a couple other fixed blades I didn't have. Trying to get a large gathering of Canal Street History before it becomes extinct or outrageously priced. Got to preserve the history as much as I can.

I was wondering who ended up with that half congress. If you ever get the story behind that one please post it. I saw it on the bay but that shield scared me off for what they were asking for it.

Definitely a cool piece.

Thanks Lyle, good to be here. I like that avatar, great to see that knife found a good home among its peers ::tu:: ::tu::

Tom, did a few repairs for Regina up in Grahamsville, great people. Chuck's got a very impressive collection of early CS.

Phil,

That was a set made for Red Hill Cutlery. 1 of 15 or 1 of 25 made, can't remember exactly. Yes, I was very glad to add that set to the gathering!

Wow, quite the knife ! I have a similar one that is a Canal Street Cutlery knife. Did CSC make any other knives for Moore Maker ?
I lost interest in MM after Camillus closed in 2007 because i thought Bear Mfg. got a contract to replace Camillus. I assume the bone & Stag handled MM still come from Queen ?

I found this info on BF...
If it's expensive, it's made by Queen.
If it's inexpensive, and there's a B after the model number, it's made by Bear and Sons.
If it's inexpensive, and there's a U after the model number, it's made by Utica.
If it's inexpensive, and there's no letter after the model number, it was made by Camillus.

Canal Street made the Pinch Lockback for Moore Maker as well

Until Doug posted the picture of his Moore Makers trapper I had no idea that Canal Street had used the Swell Centered Jack frame to build a trapper. With Doug's help I was able to locate one with mesquite handles. Unfortunately (for me) it appears he snagged the only abalone model up for sale. Life can be so cruel.
