Re: Help with tang stamps
Again, pics of entire knife will help. "R" = rostfrei (stainless), knife is likely German although i have not seen the guy smoking a pipe before.

Yes, I would love to see the whole knife & the blades!
That would be a great logo for a pipe smokers knife.
That could be what it is but can't tell without seeing the blades.

It is a pipe knife.
Re: Help with tang stamps
I collect pipe knives, so now I am even more curious to see the blades open.

Re: Help with tang stamps
It's a shadow pattern sleeveboard lobster knife. The tool on the bottom deck looks to be a manicure blade not a pipe poker/cleaner.
shadow = no bolsters; sleeveboard = shape of frame; lobster knife = blades in top & bottom deck.
Excellent condition too.
I collect similar vintage German knives and even in this condition the market value is low, which is why i collect them. A similar pattern, similar vintage USA made knife would sell for 2-4 times the value of a knife from Germany. Nothing to do with quality, just collector interest.

I have been collecting and selling for a little over a year. That is why I like knives, so many different types.
Re: Help with tang stamps
I have a Remington UMC, R6434 which is similar to this one. Would it be considered a pipe knife or something else? These knives came with a group of pipes I bought from an estate auction.

Re: Help with tang stamps
A pipe knife, or smoker's knife, usually has a scraper blade that is rounded at the tip, and a long thin 'poker' tool, and a round steel pad on one end of the frame for tamping down your pipe tobacco.
A Manicure blade can come in different styles but all have 'hatching' ? cut into them to make a file for your fingernails. Pipe pokers don't have this.

edit: get Levine's Guide to Knives 4th Ed (only 4th ed), if in good shape anything under $100 is a good deal. This book will save you decades of trying to learn on your own.
