Re: Real or fake 'Puma' ?
Doesn't look like any Puma I've ever seen and if it is real it is likely of recent manufacture and probably Pacific Rim. As far as I know Puma never used smooth bone for handle material and the stag handled double edge looks a bit crude. Just my opinion.

I ran the pics through Photoshop and enlarged them a little.

I would think that if it were a PUMA it would say "Rostfrei" (sp?) instead of stainless.

Knives for export can have "Stainless"
I think it is a pre 1960 Puma.
Have you looked over it for a 5 digit date code ? may be by blade release bar.

"No other marks on it"
Then if authentic it is pre 1964.

I thought that I had seen one like that somewhere. Yhere are plenty of pics just like the OP knife. Just Google pictures of puma swing guard. I beleive this should confirm that it is a puma.

Monte, what a good idea !
I think you are correct: lots of images of same knife as OP is strong evidence of authenticity.

Do an image search for Puma Medeci, I think that's how they spelled it.
As to the OP, I'm just not seeing the quality I'd expect from Puma in that knife.

I agree it does not have the usual German 'crispness' in it's construction.
BRL claimed that Puma's were never top quality knives, but the USA importer was able to promote them as 'best German', and this propagated the Puma myth that still exists today.

Re: Real or fake 'Puma' ?
My real question is why would they use a name of an animal that is native to and as far as I know, only seen on the North American continent? If there are Pumas in Central and South America I am not aware of it so don't beat me up too bad if that is the case. The question is still valid either way.
Puma has been around for many years. You think the folks in Germany were clammering around for a brand named after an animal with which they were not familiar? I think the Puma brand has been around since the 1700s and not sure when they began to market here in NA but I would bet a dollar to a dog poofie it was a long while after the 1700s.
It is just a marketing strategy that I have wondered about.

OK,, that settles that part. Also, I haven't heard them referred to as a Catamount since my paw-paw died.jerryd6818 wrote:Cougar (Puma, Mountain Lion, Panther, or Catamount) range:

Jerry, i was being serious. I am a serious person. I don't think i ever use sarcasm. I prefer to be direct.
If this were a fake Puma, say made in Pakistan, there might be a couple of images on line but i doubt there would have been enough production to get lots of on line pictures.
Lauterjung & Sohn began in 1769 and moved it's location to Solingen in 1855. To avoid confusion with other Lauterjung business names, in 1900 they registered "Puma-Werk" as their name. By 1912 they registered a puma head with the word "PUMA" under it as their logo.
As i understand it Puma began exporting to USA in the 1950's.
"Puma" was chosen well before there was any thought of selling in North America. Germans have long been fascinated by the old American West. Perhaps a puma seemed like a good symbol of the Wild West.

Lol, ya'll guys are the best. I seen my mistake and should have edited. Well if you click on the pics. You will see that one came from right here in the AAPK store sanders knives. I did click on it and others as well. If the knife isn't a puma then someone made plenty of them. I beleive I seen one years ago at a flea mkt and I passed it up thinking it wasn't up to the standards that I was accustomed to seeing from Puma. I will try to be more rifined in my post from now on. My mistake and I am sure it will not be my last.

Not wishing to derail the thread, but how do those cats know where the U.S./Canadian border is located?

Thats funny Charlie.lol KJ, the last sentance in my first post had a poor choice of words or word. The word "should" wasn't a good choice. I think the words " might help" would have been a better choice. I knew this and I didnt edit. Just me being lazy. I am my own worst critic.

Re: Real or fake 'Puma' ?
The map showing cougar range has the northern limit about half way up B.C., not at the USA/Canada border. The map is a bit deceptive but if you look further East it shows the range limit as well North of the Great Lakes. Trace that line west and you can see it goes well above the USA border.
I had a big male cougar come up onto my deck chasing my dog about a year ago and my property is about 75 miles due North of border with USA.
