What knife is this? How old is it?

Post by Acknifes »

I have come across a knife and was wondering how old it is. It has the markings G Butler & Co,
and a seperate stamp that says Sheffield England surrounding an oval that is inscribed with the word ART. The items on the knife are two blades, one larger and one smaller, a corkscrew and what appears to be an ice pick.

Welcome to the forums! What you have is commonly known as a sportsman's knife or horseman's knife. The Geo. Butler Co. was in business from 1865-1952. Your knife was made some time after 1891(but not too much after)due to the England mark on the tang. The handles appear to be cow horn that has deteriorated over the years. The blades are sharpened down considerably and the corkscrew's tip is broken. It is also missing the hoof pick that was attached at that hole near the front of the handle.Normally they have small tools slid under the handles;usually a splinter pick and a pair of tweezers.Your knife doesn't seem to have had those.
The value is probably minimal due to it's condition but it is nevertheless an interesting old knife. Here is a picture of what a complete one looks like. The three bottom knives are horseman's knives.
