Who's into S & M?
Re: Who's into S & M?
Many of my S&Ms also have a "gritty" pivot on the main blade which is completely unaffected by oil/lubricants. I wonder why that is?
This Swell Center Trapper has a nice Spear/Wharncliffe combination, and I think the geometry of the frame & stag scales is pretty cool too.

This that a recent production knife or one of Queen's older ones?

I'm not sure when it was made. I won it in a raffle last year. I know it was a SFO for Derrick Bohn from Knives Ship Free.bdev wrote:Nice one.wazu013 wrote:DSCN1453.JPG

There are sure some fine knives posted in this thread. I like the Keystone series the best, based on the photos. Here are a couple of mine, one little Keystone and one Premier.

Re: Who's into S & M?
I won this Harness Jack last summer here on AAPK in an auction to benefit the widow of Johnnie Fain. Made in a short run in 2005. Almost 4 inches closed. Pretty bone and fills the hand nicely.

Re: Who's into S & M?
I recently bought a little S&M that has the same "gritty" pivot. Close examination reveals that the bearing surface of the tang was not polished smooth. I think the tiny notches on the surface create the "gritty" feel. I got this knife at a very reasonable price with the intention of using it as a carry knife. It is a bit smaller (3 1/2")than my usual carry size but I wanted something different for around the house in my pajama pants. I have always been partial to a sheepsfoot and the main blade is just about the size and shape of the sheepsfoot blades on the old stockman knives that I grew up carrying, while the clip point is about right for delicate tasks needing a good point. For what I intended, this knife is perfect. The walk and talk is exactly what I like other than the aforementioned grittiness. The grind on the blades, especially the main blade, left something to be desired. It took many hundreds of passes over a soft Arkansas stone to get a good edge on the main blade.QTCut5 wrote:Many of my S&Ms also have a "gritty" pivot on the main blade which is completely unaffected by oil/lubricants. If you can live with the gritty pull, and are willing to do a good deal of sharpening to begin with, then I would say this is one fine knife! I like it!

A similar issue with this lockback. It's acquisition price was low enough so I can't complain much but its an S & M and should be better.
I'm hoping it goes away after working in.

Re: Who's into S & M?
I recently purchased that same heritage S&M in rosewood as you posted steel my heart, been carrying it for a week now and really liking it. Heres a pic of mine along with another in elk handle that was a recent purchase as well. I'm new to collecting and only have a handful of S&M knives so far but have been more than pleased with the quality.

All nice S&M's but tell us more about the orvet knife.
Edit....I'm going to guess that it is a modified ( I mean really modified ) Electrician's knife.

Jerry - you really are a jack knife man! Beautiful knives! I think I have seen that Orvet knife before, but I agree with Bdev that we need the back story.

That is a knife that ticks all the boxes for me;
1. A Wharncliffe blade
2. Elk scales
3. Whittler
4. A Wharncliffe frame
That knife has it all, congratulation on a good pick-up. A superb knife.
Tony.

Shoots!!
Looks like I missed the boat. That's a beauty, and also the one I want to add to my S&M stag 69 group.
Lemme know if you have (or see) any more for sale.

Re: Who's into S & M?
Thanks for the link, bdev. I have looked at C. Risner's site (TraditionalPocketKnives.com) before...in fact, I recently purchased a #41L Amber Carved Stag Bone Copperhead from him...but I am looking for a #69 Spear Point Barlow in Stag, not Stag Bone. So, the hunt continues. (Risner offers great prices, by the way.)

Thanks, Tony. Although this is not where I got my Elk #54 Coles Wharncliffe Whittler, this site seems to have the best price if you're looking to pick one up for yourself.Schradenut wrote:QTCut5

Two from the Keystone Series 1997. They are actually both the same color. The little one is my EDC.

Bruno, Mel, I wasn't ignoring you. For some reason I didn't make it back here and didn't see your posts.Dinadan wrote: Jerry - you really are a jack knife man! Beautiful knives! I think I have seen that Orvet knife before, but I agree with Bdev that we need the back story.
There's not much of a story to that knife. Yes, it was done by Dale (pretty obvious with his mark prominently on the blade) and yes it started life as a Camillus Electrician's knife. I guess he just decided I needed it and it showed up in the mail one day. You could have knocked me over with a feather. That's been close to four years ago and I'm still in awe of it. Makes my eyes sparkle every time I see it. I appreciate all the knives with which I've been gifted but there's a few that are especially special and this is one of them. Thank you Dale. Semper Fi brother. Edit: Probably a good time to post these while I'm at it. Please pardon the poor pictures of the pearl Doc & Gunstock. No excuse Sir.
