Case Tested Swell End Jack

Post by WeaselS_16 »

Saw this Case Tested Swell End Jack pop up, I’d really like to get my hands on one but I’m wary of all just because of the amount of counterfeits made. I also don’t have much experience with them yet. I thought I’d post this one while it’s still up and get thoughts on it, maybe I can learn some things to look out for as well. Thanks guys.

This looks like a Tested 6235 1/2 but the closed length for this model is 3 1/4". I don't see anything wrong with the knife, it is legit. The price is quite a bit higher than I'd pay for a knife in this condition. I hope this helps you out. Ricky

Knife looks right to me, but way overpriced. I don't really understand why folks like these, many companies made better knives than Case.

The knife looks okay to me. What I see is the bone and jigging matches the era (Tested XX) stamped on the tang, as does the shield https://www.allaboutpocketknives.com/ca ... xx-shields. The tang does not show any signs of having been ground down (aka shaved). The backsprings appear to be matched/aligned (one is not longer than the other) which is sometimes seen on knives that have been apart and re-assembled from mismatched parts. The blade grinds and shapes look correct for Case. Last but not east it does not appear to be “cold stamped”.

The best teacher is looking at and handling a lot of authentic old knives. Unfortunately there are not as many knife shows as there used to be, but making it a priority to go to a few is indispensable. Many of the things to watch for can be seen and studied, with picture illustrations, from posts here in the Counterfeit Watch forum. For example viewtopic.php?t=76717

Before spending a lot on Tested XX knives, spend a little on a couple of good reference books. They will more than pay for themselves. Sargent’s American Premium Guide to Knives has a lot of info and photos of Case knives, including from the Tested era. Get the 6th or 7th edition if you can find one. Also Counterfeiting Antique Cutlery by Gerald Witcher is an excellent well illustrated tutorial on how to spot counterfeit knives.

Although the seller say the blades are nice and full the pictures say otherwise. May be some issues with the handles, most notably the back side. I wouldn't entertain buying the knife at half the listed buy it now price but that is just my thought. Many knives on eBay seem to sell higher than what I would expect.
If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.

Thanks for all the responses guys, I’ll definitely pass on this one for the high price they are asking. But I will be spending some cash for reference books. Seems like they’ll do me a world of good in dealing with these knives!

This guy sure knows how to find the rare Winterbottom bone Case knives. Has two of them. Amazing! And what bargain pricing too.
