Number 0302

Post by Jacknifeben »

I have a JACK KNIFE BEN JR. with 0302 stamped on the back of the master blade. Can any one tell me who made the knife?

I know he used a lot of high-end knives, could it be an early USA Boker or Winchester maybe? ::shrug::

I thought Schrade too, glenn. But did they use a pattern number like that? ::shrug:: The pattern number stamp reminds me of Boker/Primble.

I don't think Schrade or Ulster did, but the blade etch also reminds me of Schrade/Ulster, or similar font I think I've seen on Craftsman knives maybe?

It's a Schrade. They may have stamped the pattern number that Jack Knife Ben wanted, not a Schrade pattern number.

Is it really 3 3/4", or possibly 3 3/8"?

OK then that's definitely Schrade. That model carried over for a time from Schrade Cut Co into the Schrade Walden era. Here's a shot of it in the 1940 catalog:
ZZ Schrade Cut Co Three and Three Eighths Cattle Knife 1940 Cat..jpg

They shortened the long pull at some point in its production history but I'm not sure when. That pattern was also available with a lot of different blade combinations including a couple of four blade versions. They did a number of knives in that pattern for Maher and Grosh as well:

Nice knife!!

Both knives posted by jacknifeben look like they were made by Schrade (Cut. Co. or Walden) based on the pictures posted by Eric (ea42).
I wonder if the Napanoch claim is wrong ? Just being in print from decades ago does not ensure accuracy.

Roland Napanoch's 0302 was in fact almost identical to the Schrade model, it even had almost the same shield. If I recall correctly though their version didn't hace threaded bolsters, and of course it had different jigging. I'm wondering if Schrade maintained that number for the sake of Jack Knife Ben. If he had originally used Napanoch for that model it would have been no problem for Schrade to keep that number up since by then I think Napanoch was out of business.

Nice knife. You live close to Chicago? I live about three hours from there. A lot of farmers sent live stock over and always bought knives from Ben while they were there.
