All About Pocket Knives

I have had this project idea sitting on my bench for quite awhile. I finaly got ambitious and put it together.

It's nothing more than a TL-29 screwdriver blade that has been reprofiled. I softened up the pull, as those tend to be pretty stiff, so it doesn't snap as hard as it normally would. It uses a standard TL-29 frame that has also been reshaped. The bone is Shetland Violet.



The fit and finish could be a little cleaner, but that's not what I'm after. What I am really interested in is how it performs.

1. How useful is the blade shape?

2. The covers can be shaped into something different, but how does the general shape work out?

3. How does the blade hold an edge, etc?

4. Do you see any improvements that could be made to the design?


Hopefully a few of you are willing to be give this baby a try. I'm not sure it will hold up as well as Jezebel did. Heck, it may not even make it past the first person on the list. Don't worry if things loosen up, we can do a little pitstop if needed.

If I actually used my pocket knife for something more than ballast in my pocket, I'd be on that like a duck on a bug. Love the blade profile and the bottom bolsters but alas, I wouldn't be able to do it justice. Give us a full report Phil & Josh.

I use my knife quite a bit. I'd be glad to use it for a while.

That looks like it would be a tough work knife. Stout blade. Looks good!

If it was this summer, I'd be all over it! It's hard for me to take pictures at work. But I must say, that's one fine, fine, fine looking knife as always.

Count me in Glenn. Glad I'm near the end, cause I'm gonna beat the crap out of it!

Here's my plan............I'm going to park all my other EDC knives for the duration of this knife's visit. I'll use it like a rented mule and do my best to document what I do with it. Then I'll post a brutally honest review of how it functions for me. It may take me a while to wring this thing out completely so please be patient.

OK, here we go.........

The knife arrived today. I put away my EDC knives so as to insure I'd use the test knife for as many cutting chores as possible while it's in my posession.

First impression; I was somewhat surprised at just how thick the spine of the blade was. I realize that the screwdriver blade on a TL-29 is designed to be stout, but it just seemed even more robust looking in it's revised configuration.


Being "mildly obsessed" with blades, I had to get acquainted with this one. The best way to start a relationship with a new knife blade is to sharpen it, but Glenn had already put a pretty keen edge on it. Still, there's alway room for improvement so I got out the crock sticks and gave the blade several licks just to add a little touch of my own.

Next I tested the sharpness of the blade by slicing some little curley slices from a piece of note paper. Yeah, that's the way I like em.

So far the only other cutting I have done with it was slicing a couple of bites off a hotdog to give to my very spoiled dogs. (They're such little beggers.) I'll be doing more later and will post info as I go.

So far, I like it.

This is the first one of these knife passes that I have watched in progress. I am very interested in the process and excited to see what can be learned.

Well, this one could end badly, usually i have seen these done with factory knives.

Well I thought it was time to post a little update. I've had this knife in my possession for a week now and honestly I really like it more all the time. It seems to be holding a good edge and has proven itself to be quite satisfactory for nearly all my cutting chores. The only drawback thus far it that the tip is too sharp for me to use it to clean under my fingernails, but that's a minor consideration.

I've used it several times to open the mail and even got to open a couple of knife packages with it. I used it last night to prepare dinner. I fixed a pork loin roast and veggies in one of my Dutch ovens. I sliced the roast in two and also used the knife to chop the onions, celery, new potatoes, and carrots. It has a handle that is just big enough to give me a good solid grip, and even though the blade was not long enough to cut the potatoes in one slice, it was so sharp that taking a second slice from the opposite side was a breeze. Of course I cleaned it good before and again after using it on the food.

Glenn if you don't mind I'd like to hang on to it till I get back from the knife show in Dalton this coming weekend. I would like to show it to some of the other AAPK guys and see what they think of it. So far, as I hope you can tell, I'm quite impressed.

That knife gets purtier the more I look at it.

Well I bid a fond farewell to the Glennbad knife today, shipping it off to Junebug out on the left coast. It should be there in a day or three. I honestly hated to see it go.

I really enjoyed getting a chance to try that knife out. I actually was surprised at just how well I liked it. It was up to every task I used it for and seemed to hold up flawlessly. I found the handle fit my paw quite well and the way Glenn put it together was most impressive, as I've come to expect from his handywork. I showed it around to several of the AAPK guys at the Dalton Show over the weekend and most were amazed when I told them it had started out as a TL-29. I think they all were impressed with the quality.
Glenn if I were going to suggest any change at all, it would be for a slightly longer blade. I do, however, see how the indention on the spine of the screwdriver blade limited your options for reshaping the blade to its current configuration. Thank you for the chance to pack that little jewel around for a while.

I sat with Phil for quite a while at the Dalton show and had a chance to handle Glenns creation. I didn't use it to cut anything but the fit, finish, snap etc. were excellent. I really liked the knife overall, really neat creation and would be super handy

Glad to hear you liked it so far. The only limitation on the blades are what they are to begin with.
