All About Pocket Knives

Hi all,

Just received my knife that i've ordered from a webstore. Its a ''new'' Campolin Black Widow 28cm knife. I already contacted the seller but all knifes are out of stock so replacement wasn't possible. Although i did get a small refund whats fine.

Anyway, is there maybe a way to fix the small crack in the handle? When i run my fingertip over it i can feel a little bit of a sharp edge. Its not that a big deal but it would be nice if i can make the surface of it smooth.

Epoxy a good idea?

Hi, put a drop of superglue or other brand on a surface, take a pin & dip it in the glue , put the pin with glue on it in the blemish, “wick” it off the pin. The medium viscosity would work. Any excess glue can be sanded off . Good luck.

My answer to your question is Yes, you can repair a crack or chip with epoxy. I repair chips and cracks all the time, but mostly in knives with bone scales. But I have done quite a few with horn scales, which is what I think yours is. You need to know how to work with epoxy and getting the damaged area prepped correctly and dying the epoxy so that it matches the surrounding area are some of the important aspects.

If you put in time and care you will never have to replace a handle ever even with the worst damage.

If you elect to go the Super Glue (Cyanoacrylate) route, consider putting some Lead Pencil Shavings or Baking Soda in the crack first. The Lead Pencil Shavings or Baking Soda will wick the Super Glue and help the Super Glue set. I was skeptical at first, but it works really well. The black Lead Pencil Shavings might work best for you for color matching purposes.

Wow, that looks a lot bigger than a small crack!! Good luck with your repair.

It can be repaired, but you'll have to be careful not to get the glue anywhere except the crack. Several applications may be necessary to fill the crevice and raise the surface over the surrounding horn. Then, file/sand/polish it back down.

I have used CA with baking soda and it gets really rock hard.
If the CA is too thin in viscosity, put it in the refrigerator
for 1 hr or 2, and it will get thick like molasses.
The down side will be the reaction with baking soda
may take a few extra seconds.

I've used Baking Soda / Super Glue method on Stag very successfully. Practice first, I'm betting the pencil/glue will work. Suggest using a single edge razor blade and a lid from a plastic food container. Spread out the BS like a Cocaine line picking up a tiny amount to drop into the crack, pick up just enough glue with the blades edge to wet the filler. It will wick up the glue, two-three applications till it fills up. It sets up quickly, it will surprise up. Smooth with a emery board, then polish.

There is no need to use baking soda if you just take your time and let each application of the glue dry.

Today at work i tested Loctite with pencil dust on diffirent applications but im not satisfied with the results at all. Also its pretty hard to obtain the correct mixture and dries out too fast.

I think i will just try it with Epoxy. I have some experience with it and most time it works great. It has good fluidity and gradually flows into small cracks etc.

Also plenty a time to work with it before it dries out.

Epoxy putty works good too and comes in black. No mess,no over flow. That crack looks like it may do nothing for years though..IMHO.
I have fixed a lot of gaps,chips with the epoxy putty though.

Unless you use a casting-type epoxy, it won't polish.
If you just use super glue in layers you can polish it as cleanly as the horn.

I would be concerned it could drip inside but I see your point. The knives I used it on routinely were Western L 77 daggers. There is gaps from shrinkage between the spacers and the guard in varying degrees. I packed the putty in there,wiped it smooth and it was fixed.
