One last question for MUD & others

In 1939 Joseph Gerber (advertising agency owner) had custom knife maker David Murphy make 24 sets of carving knife for some of his select customers. Catalog retailer Abercrombie & Fitch saw them and was so impressed with the quality of the knives they wanted to sell them. Thus was born Gerber Legendary Blades.

One last question for MUD & others

I have one more question about the steel in the Gerber LST knives.

I think (but not certain) the first Gerber LST knives had 440C steel with shiny blades with thumb notch.

But I think next is the thumb notch blade--BUT with bead blast finish (not shiny). Does anyone know what steel this one has?

Any other information on the steel progression would be appreciated. I know on Buck Knives the 424 models (simliar size to LST) Buck started with 440 C, then 425M and currently 420HC. I wonder what progression Gerber went through?

In my opinion, the current Gerber 420 steel is not very good. It doesn't compare to the Buck 420HC ...maybe because of the BOS heat treat. I am not trying to start an argument Gerber vs Buck. I do want to use the Gerber LST--BUT with the older and better steel.

Thanks again for listening, Bryan
