RC Cola and Moon Pie

Colonial Knife was incorporated in 1926 by three brothers; Antonio, Domenic, & Fredrick Paolantonio. It grew to become one of the largest pocket knife manufacturers in the US during the 1960s. The company shut down in 1998, but was back into production under the Colonial Cutlery International Corporation in 2001. Colonial Cutlery International, Inc. brand is the imported line of knives and tools while the U.S.A.- made products fall under the Colonial Knife brand.

RC Cola and Moon Pie

Post by possum127 »

I was looking through my knives and came across this colonial barlow. Was wondering about possible value, and possible interest. Looked on the internet, couldn't find anything. Looks like advertising is a little more valuable. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Can't tell you much about value, but as a combo, RC Cola and Moon Pies for a quick lunch or mid-afternoon snack were very popular in the 1950s and 1960s in the south. Not very nutritious, but popular. That might help date the knife.

I would say that it's worth somewhere around 20 bucks shipped or lower. Might bring more to the right person.
The graphics are nice and the knife looks like it has had light use, if any.

I can't help you with the value Ron but my wife and I,had to show her too, enjoyed seeing it. We both grew up in Kentucky in the fifties and sixties. Nutritional or not that was what we had sometimes. If you put it on eBay you never know what it could sell for. Should you ever want to sell it pm me even it is on eBay. Thanks again for sharing.

Moon pies must have been a southern thing. I’ve heard of them but don’t ever remember having one. Snack foods up here are plentiful but for whatever reason moon pies weren’t a thing.
Better Made potato chips and Hostess snack foods (loved frozen Ding Dongs later named King Dons I believe), were the snack food of the day.

I don't remember ever seeing Moon Pies in Central California. We did have plenty of RC Cola. My parents drank "Diet Rite" which was the no-sugar version and tasted horrible to me, but I was a root beer and orange soda guy... :D

Cool knife! Never seen one like it before . . ::tu::

For those that don't know, Moon Pies are made by Chattanooga Bakery in TN,
and RC Cola (short for Royal Crown) hails from Columbus, GA.

So, YES ..... it's a Southern thang you might not understand !

I'd hang on to that knife just in case you ever find yourself in Bell Buckle, Tennessee during the annual R.C. Cola and Moon Pie Festival. My wife and I went a few years ago and had a blast.

Ron.
I have a identical "Colonial Barlow" pictured below, with a different logo, it even has the same Patent number: 3,317,996. The Patent date is: 1965.
Often you will see this pattern and manufacturer with "Hollow Bolsters" which of course will lower the price and possible collector value. Our Barlows have "Solid Bolsters" Brass liners and Pins. Actually, a very well made knife.
As far as value goes, being that you have what is referred to as a "Double Collectible" that is: A near mint Barlow Knife with a R C Cola and Moon Pie Logo may add a little more value to the right collector. I would place the value between $20.00 & $25.00.

When I was around 13, my older Brother and a friend or two of ours would hunt down empty bottles with "Redemption Value" and take them to a local store, cash them in and purchase a large R C cola and a bag of Planter Salted Peanuts each, we would pour the peanuts into the R C and enjoy.
I preferred Pepsi, but R C was larger and less expensive.

Below is my Camillus (1941-1946) Cracked ice celluloid leg knife.
The Double-Cola product was developed in 1933 and soon became the company's flagship product. The product was named Double-Cola because its 12-ounce bottle were twice the size of other soda bottles being sold at the time. It was soon followed by flavored Double-Orange, Double-Lemon, and Double-Grape and "Double-Dry"

Thank you ever so much. I have the knife for sale on a facebook page, and they asked me when it was made. Also it does seem like a pretty well made knife. Thanks again for the info much appreciated.

Thank You

PS I live in west central Ohio and I went to a Rural King store today. They had MoonPies. I told my wife when I came home and she says why didn't you buy some.
