Can anyone help?

Post by Chrisw »

Hi all! I got this knife from my grandpa a while back. Now that he’s passed I’m curious about it..... does anyone know anything about it? All I know is he acquired it in the early 50’s so he said thanks!!

Welcome to AAPK Chris. A bright, in focus, close-up picture of that tang stamp will probably help those who know (that would not be me). She's sure a biggin but a handsome lass.

Check other side of tang. There should be a country name on it, likely either Germany or Italy. Looks like it is in the original box 'bottom'. Do you have the top ? If so a picture might help with ID and possible age.

It is 96847. I only saw the top of the 7, so it looked like the "t" in patent was underlined.

The back side tang looks like it might have had some poorly stamped markings ? You need a good magnifying glass to take a close look to see if these are just rub marks or if you can make out any letters. It should be marked with a country name and the name of a manufacturer or name of the merchant who ordered them.
If there really are no other markings, it could be a Chinese knock off of this Italian design. However the Chinese were not making decent quality knock offs until about 20 years ago and according to your grandfather this knife is at least 60 years old.

These are known as "derby bolster" knives-due to the shape of the finger guards. I doubt it is from the early 1950s-probably 1960s. It appears to be the 11" size, which is fairly rare.
It was made in Maniago, Italy.
