Knife Show-And-Tell 2020 Style – Who Want’s To Play?

Who remembers Show-and-Tell during elementary school where the teacher would go around the room calling on students to talk about something they brought to school and wanted to share with their fellow students? Ring a bell?

Well this is a pilot test of the 2020 style of that popular elementary school activity, and you have a chance to join-in using Zoom and showing your fellow AAPK-ers some of your knives! Here is my plan:
  • My free Zoom account allows me to have up to a 40-minute teleconference so that’s the duration of the game.
  • The game will be played on this Saturday June 20th, 2020 at 1200hrs. EDT
  • 10 players (including me as the host) will be allowed to play the game and each will be required to have a camera and microphone to participate
  • The game will be a round-robin of 1-minute for each player to display and answer other players questions about any knife they wish to Show-and-Tell
  • The game may allow for as many as 3 rounds of Show-and-Tell so each player should be properly prepared
This could be a huge success or a huge flop but at any rate 10 of us are going to get the chance to see one another, hear one another and share a story or two about some special knives in our collections. This is the planned Zoom Show-and-Tell schedule:
  • Minute 1 – Host Introduction and Welcome
  • Minute 2-10 – Player Introductions
  • Minute 11-20 – Show-and-Tell Round 1
  • Minute 21-30 – Show-and-Tell Round 2
  • Minute 31-40 – Show-and-Tell Round 3
If this is a success, I can see myself hosting a regularly scheduled knife Show-And-Tell and potentially spawn others to host similar Show-and-Tells. Feedback regarding the outcomes of this 2020 Show-and-Tell will be posted in this thread.

So who wants to play? The first 9 Private Message’s that I receive with:” I’m in and here’s my email address……..” will get my Zoom invite.

Can't make it, but it sure is a cool idea!
Hope it successful. I'd like to participate in the future!

I don't have the equipment. I'm falling behind technology and can't seem to give a rat's ***. My daughter sent a Nixplay online picture frame to me for Father's Day and I can't use it because my phone is not compatible. Sigh.

Sorry Steve and Jerry - it's our loss that you can't play this time - but I'm hoping and ::pray:: that there will be more.

I won't be home on the 20th, sorry.
I have used Zoom before and was not too impressed with it. It was pretty hard to follow so I uninstalled it.
But I can download it again if needed.

Without actually seeing each other live and hearing each other's voices, isn't this site one big show and tell?

True, but I think "live" would be much more fun.
Let me ask you - (not knowing if you have a significant other or not, I'll ask any way) Let's say you're on the road, not due home for another week. How would you rather communicate with them? Texts and emails all the time? Or video chat?
Heck, I would even rather talk to my wife on the phone than just through texts.
But that's me.

Skip - my thinking was that seeing and hearing each other live was different and cool enough than what we are used to here (which is great) but based on the number of PM’s in my inbox asking to participate (zero), I must be alone in that thinking ::shrug:: can’t blame a guy for trying something different (and possibly cool)

I think it would be fun to video chat with several guys and show our latest Treasures.

Anyone know how how many people you can get on a video chat with Facebook?

I have done one-on-one chats with Tony in Australia and a friend of mine in Hong Kong and the quality was very good, especially with Hong Kong. But I've never had multiple people on at one time. Anybody have any experience with that?

I think it's a great idea and I would volunteer to participate if I had the equipment. The only time I really get to do something like this is right before a knife show that I attend in January each year.

I meet a few of my knife enthusiast friends for breakfast right before the show. I met them all through knife forums and it's the only time I get to see those guys. We sit around the breakfast table and talk knives while we're stuffing our faces with pancakes and bacon.

The comradery at the breakfast table is something that I really enjoy and look forward to. It's just as good or better than the show itself. I wish I could participate in this Show-And-Tell.

Great idea, Tom!

I have a company issued cell phone that looks just like this. I can't bring myself to get my own smart phone because I never see a bill for using this one.

I’ll give it a shot again down the road - somehow I imagined that technology wouldn’t be the barrier but I was proved wrong. Do you think being flexible on date/time would make a difference Steve?

BTW - congrats on your concealed carry permit, good to know that good citizens around me are taking personal protection seriously.

Maybe set up a poll of dates and times you would be able to host. Most votes determines when. I would allow for multiple votes for people who are flexible.

And thanks, but it's not for concealed carry, just a permit to purchase a hand gun. Concealed Carry is a whole 'nuther ball of red tape!

Great suggestion, I’ll add that to the next attempt.

Ahh gotcha, I enjoy my S&W model 66 revolver which shoots .38, .38 Special and .357. A real workhorse.

Steve, I used to have a "significant other" aka "wife" but that was ages ago. I'll take the 5th on the question.

It was a "different" idea Tom, it just didn't materialize.

Tom several years back several of us had a great time meeting in the chat room AAPK used to have. It was the next best thing to being together in person. Your idea for a zoom meeting would be great I think. Don't give up.

With the help of the Good Lord & the big spoon, I got her going. Some knife pictures but mostly baby pictures.
