New scales for a gassing Western

In 1911, H. N. Platts, was able to draw on his extensive friendships and family connections in the cutlery world to start Western States Cutlery and Manufacturing of Boulder Colorado. At first only a jobbing business, by 1920 construction and machinery purchases were underway to begin manufacture of knives. Through name changes--to Western States Cutlery Co. in 1953, then Western Cutlery Co. in 1956--and moves first across town and later to Longmont Colorado, the company stayed under the leadership of the Platt family until 1984. In that year, the company was sold to Coleman, becoming Coleman-Western. Eventually purchased by Camillus in 1991, Western continued until Camillus expired in 2007.

Good thing you found out about the outgassing when you did. Could have been much worse but I feel you caught them in the nick of time. The new handle looks real nice Dave. You definitely have some skills my friend. ::nod::

Great job! Those are nice knives, but every cracked ice Western I ever saw is a gasser. Too bad, because they are pretty. Well, now you have good knives that are even prettier. Thanks for sharing! ::tu::

Wow, that looks great. Good to get rid of gasses before they cause more problems.

Thanks Guys. It appears Western cracked ice is prone to gas but it seems to do so very slowly. All three of these knives have been sitting on a shelf near my computer for a year or two. The worst one just got more cracked and coated the metal more lately. The red wipes off the metal on the other two with Wenol. I'll still rescale them because it is inevitable that they will need it but I want to find something I really like before I tackle it. ____Dave

Great save, nice wood too, what kind? Love that grain and contrast. Beauty.
