In 1911, H. N. Platts, was able to draw on his extensive friendships and family connections in the cutlery world to start Western States Cutlery and Manufacturing of Boulder Colorado. At first only a jobbing business, by 1920 construction and machinery purchases were underway to begin manufacture of knives. Through name changes--to Western States Cutlery Co. in 1953, then Western Cutlery Co. in 1956--and moves first across town and later to Longmont Colorado, the company stayed under the leadership of the Platt family until 1984. In that year, the company was sold to Coleman, becoming Coleman-Western. Eventually purchased by Camillus in 1991, Western continued until Camillus expired in 2007.

I'm new to this group but not to Western Cutlery knives. My wife and I worked for Harvey Platts at the Longmont, Colorado plant. I bring my knowledge and experience to the group, should be interesting...

You and your experience are very welcome. Glad to have you.

By the way, do you know if Western ever made a 3-5/8" closed knife on a swell center frame like the Camillus 72?

Welcome. My first knife was a Western L28. I still have it. My Dad bought it for me at a Army surplus store sometime around 1955. I actively collected all Westerns for years. I don't see many anymore that I don't already have. I'm looking forward to hear some of your insight and knowledge as questions come up. ____Dave

Welcome Stag Man.......glad to have you on board. It's been long thought that Western actually produced an official folding knife for the Boy Scouts of America although as a 50+ year collector of that genre I have yet to find one that would support that thought. I know they produced many fixed blade knifes but my question is; do you know if Western ever produced an official BSA folding knife?

As others have stated, we like pictures here so please entertain us. Again ::welcome::

Welcome! Delighted and excited to have you here! Looking forward to much more from you; I for one have some disturbing thoughts about tang stamp chronologies. I don't think it was always exactly what was said in "The Knife Makers Who Went West (heretofore referred to by me as TKMWWW). And we sure do want to see your knives!

Thank you, Cal. Yes, it's 4 1/2".

I was hoping a picture of a Western knife would nudge our new friend but it may take more than that.

Welcome home Stag man. Nice to have someone around who actually built the finest CV knives ever made. IMO

For that alone I thank you and your wife for being a part of such a wonderful Knife co.

Hope to see you around and look forward to your Western postings and well you know, the pics of those rare one of a kind beauties found under the machinist table that somehow mysteriously ended up in you lunch box. :7)

Just poking, glad your here with the rest of us Western nuts.
