Schrade 8OTB Bone/440c

Post by Producer »

New for me is this Taylor China Schrade.

Now I have 5 USA 8OT's etc, etc, 34's and the list goes on. I've also grabbed some Chinese Schrades before and those have been discussed quite thoroughly here and elsewhere.
What caught my eye on this model [and a few others] was two things.
1. Bone handle
2. 440C steel

Being a Schrade guy I had to see one of these so I bought a 8OTB.

First thing I noticed was it seemed nicely made. Nice snap on all three blades. No rubbing.
It reminded me immediately of some better made Rough Riders I have. You just know they were made in the same plant on the same machines. There is even the slightest bit of horizontal tool line on one of the blades kind of common on Rough Rider stockmans.
That is no big deal to me. Make no mistake this is a really nice knife.
I love the bone handles.
The one issue I had with this knife is the handles dye bled.
I'm obsessive when I get a knife, new or used. I go through a washing, cleaning, lubing, sharpening cycle before I put it in it's place with the others.
When I unwrapped the 8OTB I wiped it with a cloth and brown dye showed on the rag.
It's almost like they didn't let the dye dry enough before packing it up.
Anyway no problem as I did my spa thing to it and it came out nice imo!
So, here is a Chinese 8OTB. No matter what you think of Taylor this is clearly offered to enthusiasts as the Bone/440c models cost a little more.
I'm glad they are available.

The Steel I see listed for this knife is 9Cr13Mov. I think it is a few steps better than the steel Taylor offered in the last batch he put out.

The vendor I got this from [K___E CTR] lists the steel as 440c along with 5-6 other OTB models eg: 34OTB,
94OTB, 72OTB etc.
Taylor's Schrade site lists the steel as 9Cr13mov as you noted.

Good question, does anyone else have one of these?

ps. Here's a few more shots of the 8OTB

I'm not selling any of my USA 8OT's, but I'm satisfied with this bone handled model for what it is. I plan on carrying it and using the heck out of it to see how well it will hold up.
If I didn't have six 34OT's I'd have no problem getting a 34OTB.

I think it would be fun to do some cutting tests.
See if it will get sharp and if it will stay sharp.
From past experience with Taylor brands, it may or may not be either of those steels.

For the price of one of these new, you can get a used USA made 8OT--which I've done after seeing the Chinese ones in various local stores.

I've heard of people snapping the blades on Taylors regularly from normal cutting tasks--not prying.

Me likey! ::tu:: IF I didn't have my Queen Stockman (D2 tool steel) I might consider buying one of those. (Heck, I might consider getting two, one to give away and one to keep as a "beater" (EDC) knife). These knives are meant to be used and used hard! That's what a pocket knife is all about.

About 3 months ago I bought a 72OTB from the same dealer as the OP and they also claim 440C for it. I bought to use and save the wear and tear on my USA 72OT. I have to say that so far It holds a good edge and the fit and finish is excellent. Very happy with it. ::tu::

So many deride the Chinese steels. I, for one, like the 9Cr18MoV Chinese Steel. It serves on a par with 440C. At the price, who can complain? I paid $75.00 for My Queen Barlow (#69 1/2) and am happy with it. I also have a Boker Plus Barlow with "440C" steel blades (I'd be willing to bet that it is 9Cr18MoV steel). While I carry my Queen on a daily basis, I wouldn't be afraid to carry the Boker Plus Barlow either! ::sotb::
