looking for other patents for KA-BAR

The KA-BAR brand originated as a trademark of the Tidioute Cutlery Company. Tidioute was later taken over & renamed the Union Cutlery Company which continued making the brand until Union eventually adopted it as the company name in 1952. Cutco Corporation later acquired the company in 1996.

looking for other patents for KA-BAR

Post by steve99f »

In searching google patents I've found a few patents assigned to Union Cutlery Company from RD Brown of the ownership family. Two in particular pertain to forming celluloid handles and were issued in 1933 and granted in 1935. These are patent # 1998044 and 1998356. For some reason I am not able to attach. The goal is to determine a range of years or the approx year of initiation of the ricasso marks for KA-BAR where patents are referenced in the mark. There is one mark seen that specifically uses the patent numbers of the noted patent numbers and so suppose that the mark came into to use about the time of patent issuance. The other mark that is often seen is the KA-BAR over REG US PAT OFF. This is the mark I'm interested in. What patent or patents is this a reference to? If anyone knows.

If I'm reading this correctly, then saying "Reg US Pat Off" is the equivalent of using the circle-R registered mark. Wouldn't that be applied to the KA-BAR name, not to any specific patent?

Also - check this page out: http://tmsearch.uspto.gov/bin/showfield ... ehx8am.2.8

That shows the KA-BAR mark was first registered in 1924. Therefore, any knife with the "KA-BAR/REG US PTO OFF" on it would be after 01/08/1924.

The REG refers to the registration of KABAR as a registered trademark of Union Cutlery Co.

Thank you TFL and ZZ that's a good data point. And more to the point, while there may be other UCC/KA-BAR patents, and there are, this mark is for the KA-BAR name and not a design item. ::tu::
