Unknown Ka-bar

The KA-BAR brand originated as a trademark of the Tidioute Cutlery Company. Tidioute was later taken over & renamed the Union Cutlery Company which continued making the brand until Union eventually adopted it as the company name in 1952. Cutco Corporation later acquired the company in 1996.

Model 598-5 if it is a five inch blade which it looks like it has. 598s were pre-WW2 knives but only joined the KA-BAR line up in the late 1930s yours without the Union Cutlery Co mark on the back side would likely be an early 1940s knife. Model 598 was available with blades from 4-8" in one inch increments and are fairly common models to find. 598s made during war time will have steel pommels and guards and the 7 & 8" models were discontinued, and a few early war time ones will have wood pommels with steel butt caps. War time 598s and post war models will be seen with KA-BAR over Olean, NY stamps and then KA-BAR over USA stamps.
