Early Cripple Creek's
Early Cripple Creek's
This is one of my favorite's by Bob Cargill...a 5 blade sowbelly made in 1984.
If anyone has some of his early knives...pre 1990...I'd sure like to see them...

Re: Early Cripple Creek's
Hey All,
I didn't know Brian put up a Cripple Creek section. I am going to have to get out the camera. I have a few 81's that i've been adding to the collection. Just have'nt gotten around to documenting them. The 10th annv. really isn't pre 90's but it is close. It was my pride and joy till last week. I bought an 81/ stag/ 5 blade stockman/ cripple creek shield/ supposedly 1 of 12 but i have not found any thing to back up that claim yet.
Hope to see more collectors show up in the future.
untill the next time

Re: Early Cripple Creek's
I've been away from knife collecting for many years but found this forum when I just happened to do a search for Cripple Creek knives.
Soulmanticore,
I was very active back in the early '80's and had 10 (maybe it was 12) 5-bladed stag Cripple Creek Stockman's in my possession, (all from the same production batch) when they were first made. At the time, however, it was not known what a PITA it was for Bob to make them and, hence, no one realized that he only created a few. I honestly don't know how many were actually made but I remember someone telling me, later, that the original batch was the only 5-bladed Stockman's that were made. As I recall, however, the shields were mixed. I think there were 2 Buffalo shields and the rest were Cripple Creek shields, in the batch that I had. I picked out the best one, of each shield, to keep for myself, and traded the others away. They are truly works of art and great examples of Bob's early production knife-making capabilities. When I get a chance, I'll try to post some photos.

Here's some quick pics of the 5 bladed Stockman's, with each shield. Please forgive my lack of photo skills.

Re: Early Cripple Creek's
very nice knives, I just picked up a cripple creek shield, this year, myself. Prices are lower than i have seen them in 5 years. What i really treasure is a Bob Cargill buisness card that came with the knife. I will get some pictures of it.

I personally love the trapper pattern. And those are some nice examples. The knife in the 4 th picture, and in front on the last picture. Is the spey blade larger than the others? Or is it an optical allusion?

Hey Tom,
I will agree with with you about the knife putting Bob on the map, but please correct me if i am wrong. I always thought there were 2000 of this pattern made and 500 of the equal end cigar pattern?
Do you make knives know? Can we see some of them?
Untill the next time

My name is Jacquelynn Glass-Hagerty
I have some of Bob Cargill's early knives...I began collecting knives because of my grandfather, Merle Trout...who founded the Allegheny Mountain Knife Collector's Association. I traveled to many knife shows with him and my grama Ruth along with my mother and sister. I have had the pleasure of meeting Bob Cargill and his knives are the treasures of my collection. I have one knife that has the card that accompanied it, signed by him also (a 1983 AMKCA club knife by Cripple Creek). I treasure these knives with an enormous amount of sentimental value, but have recently wondered about their cash value. How do I go about finding the values of my collection???...it's been over 10 years since I have been to a show....I'll post some pics of some of these early pieces soon.

Basser,
Looks like you have a nice start to your collection.
Jacquelynn,
I will be more than happy to lend a hand. I have been keeping selling prices from ebay since 2005. I can tell you what they have sold for in the past. Depending on how you look at it, This year has been great for Cripple Creeks. They are selling very reasonable.

soulmanticore,
Any idea what the 5-blade Stockman's might go for, today (see post #4)? I believe that these were one of the very first knives that Bob made under the Cripple Creek name.
Thanks,

Re: Early Cripple Creek's
I bought one last year for $296 and was happy to give it. It had the Cripple creek shield. These knives have not come up for sale alot. Back in 08 one sold for $710. That had to be a bidding war. Or a couple of people using their snipping programs and not paying attention.
