CSC Prototypes

Former Schrade President Walley Gardner and principal Joe Hufnagel joined with nine master cutlers to form a group of US craftsmen with over 300 years of combined knife making experience to create Canal Street Cutlery. It was first located in upstate New York where a long and rich tradition of quality knife making dates back to the 19th century. Unfortunately, the company closed its doors in 2015, but not before making some great knives. The brand was resurrected in 2018 as Canal Street Cutlery Co-Op & focused on making very small batches of high quality traditional knives. As a Co-Op, it was owned by the knife makers who worked there. Unfortunately, the business model couldn't hold up & the entity again ceased production.

CSC Prototypes

Post by mumblypeg »

A recent purchase from Mr. L at Redtrout. D'Holder drop point with blued steel. The handles are exotic wood, not sure what type.

If you have any prototypes, please post a pic. I have one other, a stag stockman, that I'll take some pics of and post when I get a chance.

Wow ! Two excellent additions you have there. I like em both but that stockman is all kinds of pretty IMO. ::drool::

Congratulations on adding those to your collection.

Those are nice indeed! I was not aware that you were a Canal Street Guy...lol

That's a good thing though, I also am a Canal Street guy as well. I have a lot of Prototypes, unfortunately I am away from my knives at the moment and cannot take photos. I will however scan my laptop tonight and see if I already have pictures on it.

Richard (Redtrout) is a great guy. He and I have talked via telephone when he was still in NC and I have purchased from him as well. He was in tight with Wally Gardiner and the folks at Canal Street, hence he has (Had) a lot of Canal Street knives.

A few years ago he gave me about 12-15 Schrade Picture frame style display boxes that I have made up with different sets of Schrade knives.

He always seems to come up with a dandy knife that I just can't do without....lol

I've never met Redtrout but I've dealt with him numerous times and he's a real gentleman and a great guy to do business with. He's got one on ebay right now that's making the sweat pop out on my forehead. ::drool:: ::nod::

Thanks Tom, I'd love to see the different kinds of prototypes Canal Street came up with. These are the only ones I have (for now).

I fell for Canal Street knives after the first whittler I bought from Bryan back in '05. The fit-n-finish were top notch, and I really liked the story behind the company. I collected the old Shrades for years (Grandpa carried one), and Canal Street just seemed to be a nice fit.

Anyway, looking forward to seeing more protos ::ds::

Y'all have a Merry Christmas!

P.S.- Phil, you are exactly right about Redtrout. Never met, but a great guy to deal with.

That is one nice group, Tom. ::tu::

Are those Pinch Lock backs or the larger Squeeze?

A Squeeze has a lanyard hole. A Pinch does not.

Fifth picture down are Pinch Lockbacks and 2 Trappers. The ninth picture down are the Squeeze. The Python looking scaled Squeeze is a one of a kind. It is actually tooled leather and they put way too much time into the knife to be able to produce and sell them.

I grabbed her up...lol

Thanks Will, I never noticed that about the squeeze.

Excellent collection Tom. I like seeing the different ideas for production that were thought of. A wider variety than I had imagined.

Those were just the prototypes....I have gathered up about 350 Canal Street Knives...maybe a few more

I just need to learn the art of photographing the knives, because my pictures are not good. The certainly do not do the knives justice.

 Wow, I probably have 350 knives, total. About 10% are Canal Street.

Have you tried a "portable studio" from Walmart? Comes with a light box, 2 lights, and a small tripod. Folds up smaller than a briefcase. My pictures improved big time using one.

Tom great shots, that trophy set is just amazing!

Here's a pretty cool one, it was modeled after the old Marbles safety knife. This was the large version, 8" closed to the end of the lock/safety extension. There was talk of making a smaller version as well, but everything was put on the back burner due to difficulties in cost effectively machining a slot in the safety for the blade edge to nestle in. Then of course the place closed so that was that. I don't recall what the handles are made of, might be linen micarta but not sure.
