What would be the value of a Case Bros & co Gowanda NY Knife in nice condition? I think these were one of the first case knives. The tang stamp is listed as 1896 in the case tang stamp series. Please advise.

Value of a knife depends on much more than just the tang stamp such as overall condition, blade wear & snap, etc. More information is needed as well as some clear photos showing all aspects (top, bottom, inside, outside, open blade(s), closed blade(s), etc.) before any kind of value can be assessed.

Emphatic ditto on QT’s comment. Be aware that there are modern knives (1990s) with the Gowanda stamp. Use the Search function under Quick Links to search for “Gowanda” and prepare to be educated.

From what I can see I would say the stamp on your knife is not an authentic Case Gowanda stamping. The letters appear to be individually and some double stamped. The spacing of the Gowanda NY appears too broad and letters are not uniform linearly. Is the second blade also stamped? The blade pivot pin looks to be steel rather than NSL which would be correct for the knife.

I’m also skeptical of the stamp, for the reasons Wayne stated.
