Anyone for a chuckle?

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

That certainly is quite an imaginative creation! At lease there is one element of truth in the auction - "Tested Knife Flat Blades Rare". ::rotflol:: ::rotflol::

I just realized there is a Case box in the background. It seems like the box end with all the pattern # and mfg. date should also be displayed. ::hmm::

Yes; I don't understand why the seller either has not clued into that or is suffering from some mental imbalance. I have purchased CASE knives with similar vintage boxes and they are of quite recent manufacture. The whole listing is just bizarre.

I'm not a Case person, but isn't the box from the 1970s or 1980s or maybe even later?

I can't see Case having a flag background on a shiny finish on a box from the time frame specified (1920-1939). Most of the boxes from that era (by any manufacture) that I have seen were bulk 1/2 dozen or dozen boxes. Most of the colors were flat in appearance and some shade of white prining on blue, green, orange or black, sometimes black on "lighter" colors. Or they were off-white/creamish colored with a paper label glued on.

edit - I just went nosing around on fleabay - I found the same box associated with a knife with a 2020 date assigned to it.

The knife is a 6465, a fairly rare pattern. Case made the pattern with both a saber ground and a flat ground master blade, and with and without a bale. As far as I know it was not made after the Tested era. This one offered on eBay has evidence of heavy buffing, as indicated by the smooth shiny blade finish versus the obvious pitting on the tangs (whoever did it could not buff the tangs as extensively without damaging the stamps). It appears to have possibly been re-handled also, and probably taken apart for cleaning.

I think the box in the pictures is just a photo prop. When that pattern was made there were no individually boxed Case pocket knives that I know of. I wouldn’t obsess over the box in the pictures.

Rare pattern but far from mint condition, way overpriced IMHO.

As Ken said, the knife is an authentic Case 6465. Has been cleaned/buffed.

Still a rare and valuable knife even with the cleaning.

Here is one that I have with yellow celluloid handles.

Thanks for clarifying that, Ken and Steve. I was under the impression that the knife in the OP was a Frankenknife that someone had cooked up. Nice to know that such a pattern actually exists.

As usual a “Search” will find legitimate examples of the pattern here on AAPK. (You just have to know the pattern number to search for). Here’s one such example. viewtopic.php?f=66&t=66628&p=812552&hilit=6465#p812492
